BOOK REVIEW: Winged Hussar brings Caesar to Life
An old friend of BoLS has opened up his newest publishing house and is bringing wargamers and historr fanatics the classics with a new spin.
Winged Hussar is the publishing house of Vincent Rospond – the man who spent some time growing and expanding Games Workshop’s Black Library into the powerhouse it is today.
Well times change and Vincent has just put out his first softcover – an edited version of Julius Caesar’s The Gallic Wars.
Now we’ve all had to trundle through dry, dusty texts from ages past in college, but Vincent pulls off quite the hat-trick here. His cleaned up and annotated Caesar is clear, crisp and easy on modern readers. Even more importantly, Mr. Rospond adds copious maps, annotations, and notes across Caesar’s writings, giving same-page insight, context, and translations of archaic terms into modern language.
We get everything from inside jokes, politics, to maps that make sense, to what characters made appearances in HBO’s “ROME” series.
Its a fast enthralling read, that not only illuminates one of history’s most important figures, but entertains, and inspires. They say truth is stranger than fiction, and I’ve already got half a dozen great wargaming campaign and battle ideas brewing in my head from this one.
