A bunch of breaking news today: Guess who’s headed to a tabletop near you! I smell matted fur…
Then an anonymous source chipped in today with this:
White Dwarf issue 24 has a Space Wolves vs Orks box set in it.
The cover has Space Wolves on it, and the exact quotations are Space Wolves vs Orks Boxed Set: Stormclaw.
So Sanctus Reach looks to be a narrative vehicle for various product tie-ins. It’s got Orks, Astra Militarum, Knights, and apparently next week the Space Wolves will be arriving to save the day.
There were previous rumors of terrain tie-ins, as well as the upcoming Chaos waves in the week ahead.
If this all pans out, it will be a good example of GW totally moving away from “the rules” as an overall concept and wrapping both arms around the narrative and background story side of the hobby as a primary vehicle to tie together new products.
I’m not saying it’s good or bad, – but its different. It reminds of of the releases that wee wrapped around the old global campaign books from 4th like Eye of Terror, or Armageddon.
I think at this point we can firmly say that GW is headed into the realm of telling us the story of the Dark Millennium and giving us a loose framework of rules to let us play with our toys in that universe.
It feels like more of a sandbox for play and less a “perfectly balanced game” each day.
It’s up to the you the consumer to determine if that is a good thing or a bad one.
