AoS: Legions of Nagash In The New Edition
The Dead do not rest in peace in the Age of Sigmar. Today we get a preview of what the warriors of the realm of Shyish will bring to the tabletop – It’s a post-Necroquake (under)world out there!
We just got to see what Summoning Changes are coming to the Age of Sigmar. Now we’re getting an idea of how those changes will impact an army that certainly appreciates bringing back warriors from the dead.
The new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar is set just after the Necroquake – a magical cataclysm brought about by Nagash’s great work. Foreshadowed in Malign Portents and the recent Idoneth Deepkin battletome, just what the Necroquake is and what it means for the Mortal Realms are still to be revealed – but we can be sure that it’s not good news for Order, Chaos and Destruction…
One of the first big changes that will impact this army: Command Abilities. Just like everyone else, the Legions of Nagash have a ton of heroes with Command Abilities and now that you’ll be able to use them via the new Command Point changes, you’ll start to see some pretty stunning combos come out of that. Now you’ll be able pair Nagash up with other heroes like a Necromancer with the right combination on Grave Guard, you’ll be able to attack with an extra +1, re-roll 1s to hit, and pile in twice. That’s more than enough to kill most things.
And let’s not forget the next big change – Summoning! The undead are notorious for re-filling their ranks with the bodies of the fallen. And thanks to the change to Summoning it’s going to be better than ever because those reinforcements no long cost reinforcement points!
No faction benefits more from the changes to summoning than the Legions of Nagash. Indeed, the book was designed to function around the new summoning mechanic, and you’ll find the Endless Legions command ability – which allows you to choose one destroyed unit and set it up again – an essential part of your strategies. It gets better when you consider that you can use the same command ability multiple times in the same turn – you could well be bringing back two or even three units every turn! Powerful summonable units like Grave Guard, taken in large units, will be highly effective choices in the new edition.

Skeletons Get Silly
Okay, so you know how we like to call out silly combos as a way to say “Hey – this is broken. Maybe don’t try this at home.” Well GW seems to be in on the gag – only they are giving you the thumbs up to try these out for yourself. “YES – This is working as intended” and the results are just silly.
Let’s start with a unit of 40 Skeletons with spears. That’s already 120 attacks. Nothing to scoff at! But that’s just the beginning.
Using the Vampire Lord’s Blood Feast and the Wight King’s Kord of Bones that will bring you up to 200 attacks! Impressive – but we’re still going…
If your army general is rocking with the Lord of Nagashizzar command trait that’s ANOTHER +1 to their attacks. We’ve just hit 240 attacks. Now, skeletons aren’t known for their martial prowess – that said, with a Zombie Lord on a Dragon nearby you get the Dread Knight ability and that can allow them to re-roll failed hit rolls. Terrified yet? Good – we have more…
Take those 240 attacks that re-roll to hit and just DOUBLE IT with Vanhel’s Danse Macabre. Yeah – 480 attacks that re-roll to hit. The odds are in your favor.
Here’s the kicker: All that only takes up 3 command points in the new system. With the right heroes, magic and abilities, you can turn your block’o’skeletons into something truly scary.
Nagash And Endless Spells
Nagash is the Lord of the Realm of Death and he’s a potent magic user. So naturally he’s going to pack a punch with the Endless Spells. While we don’t know exactly how those spells will work – I think we can take a pretty good stab at them base on the rules above…and the fact they are named ‘Endless Spells.’
The Tides of Death are coming to Age of Sigmar. You are not prepared!
