After a bunch of setbacks, the team of antiheroes is on set in Atlanta – and Florence Pugh is giving us a behind-the-scenes look.

A world without Avengers doesn’t mean there’s not a group of superheroes. There is a group and they’re called the Thunderbolts.

The team that’s been built in the post-credits of other projects, Marvel’s Thunderbolts, hits theaters next year. The movie is bringing back minor villains from across the MCU – Yelena Bolova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).

They’re not exactly evil people, but they’re not about to be the next Captain America (sorry, John). They could all benefit from some therapy and maybe a nap. They have a stern leader with an acerbic sense of humor and a great fashion sense in the form of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by the wonderful Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Thunderbolts Sneak Peek

Production has been all over the place for this one. Like many, its initial summer 2024 release date was pushed back during the WGA and SAG labor disputes. Due to scheduling issues, part of its initial cast was forced to leave the project (none of the established heroes have dropped out). Lee Sung Jin (Beef, Always Sunny in Philadelphia) updated the script, and filming started last month at Marvel Studios in Atlanta.

Star Florence Pugh snuck in a peek at her new Black Widow costume and some of her coworkers on set.

It’s not a lot, but seeing the movie back in production is great. It’s one of the few projects on the upcoming Marvel slate that I’m looking forward to. The ensemble cast is fantastic, as is the mix of characters they’re bringing back to the screen. Let’s hope that the script and directing are as good… and that this release date sticks.

Thunderbolts will debut in theaters on May 2, 2025.
