Today lets talk about something near and dear to each and every one of us – terrain and how we use it.

We can break down the terrain situation for most gamers into two broad categories:

Its Stuff to Make the Board Look Cool
Everyone starts off at some level with this point of view.  No one wants to play wargames on an empty pool table, so first with books, then shoeboxes, eventually moving on up to pro-quality themed terrain peices we all want a visual feast to move our toy soldiers around on. For these folks terrain is all about crafting a beautiful scene to play on.

Its Yet Another Tool to Ensure Victory
You know these guys, and you may be one of them. They arrive at a table, mentally group all the terrain into their various rules implications, compare lists with the opponent, then start to move terrain around  to not only spread the pieces around but maximize their advantage.  Thinking about objective placement will also play into this mental view on terrain.

We won’t deal with actually using the terrain during the game, as that goes into actual gameplay skills.  What I want to hear from you guys is what is your philosophy on the construction of the board.  What kinds and amount of terrain do you want to see on your boards, and how do you use it along with your lists to shape the game. A secondary point is where is the line between using terrain to your advantage, and potentially spoiling a game with unfair placement?

It is often said that the best players are already half way to victory before the roll for first turn is made, and proper terrain placement is one of the key skills used to get there.

Lets hear from you folks.  We fellow Generals want to hear specifics about your lists and terrain philosophies.  Poll, down below, VOTE!  The floor is yours.
