Book Review: Hunt for Voldorius
And here we have another “Space Marine Battles” novel, “Hunt for Voldorius.” This time we follow the exploits of Kor’sarro Khan of the White Scars as he, well… hunts for Voldorius.
This is the first book by Andy Hoare that I have read, and I have to admit, that his prose can be a bit… “clunky”, from time to time. Regardless, the book is still entirely readable, and Hoare has a good feel for the Space Marines as characters (as one might expect).
Another nice point about the book, is that even though anyone who has glanced through Codex: Space Marines already knows what the end result of the hunt is, the story still manages to keep you on your toes. It provides a decent look at the White Scars, as well as inventing some cool back story for Voldorius as well. If that weren’t cool enough, it also features the Raven Guard fairly heavily, and fans of that chapter should also consider giving this book a read.
While reading, I couldn’t help but compare Hunt for Voldorius to the last battles novel I read, “Helsreach”. In that respect, I feel that Hunt came out a little ahead, if for no other reason than that Hunt contains the awesome “heck YEA” moment that I really felt was lacking in Helsreach. (Though they do both oddly involve churches falling on heroes…)
Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable 416 pages of 40k fiction, and I definitely recommend it to fans of the White Scars and the Raven Guard alike.
~3.5/5 stars. I’ve only read two of the SM Battles books so far, how was Rynn’s World? And is anyone looking forward to “The Purging of Kadillus”?
