FoW Review: Das Book
Are you Flames of War players looking for that one perfect product? Well, for a mere $10 quite possibly one of the best rule supplements ever.
As I cracked open this collated set of special and advanced rules from over a dozen Flames of War supplements, the all so familiar and wonderful smell of new rule book hit me. (Have I ever mentioned that I love the smell of new rule books? Well I do.) I did my cursory first glance through the book and was impressed by what I saw. So I did mention this book is $10 right? That alone makes this quite possibly one of the best gaming purchases I have ever made.
Each page is in full color and it includes all of the full size rule book missions with their rules in the convenient A5 (half page) size. On top of that the third basic mission “Hold the Line” is replaced by the more commonly used mission online mission “No Retreat.” This is nice because it makes the mission more accessible to new players. We also get two new basic missions that I’m itching to play. (Once I play them I’ll write up my thoughts about how they play.) The fun doesn’t stop there. We get the airborne, amphibious, boccage, street fighting, fortification and river rules with associated missions. To top off the game gaming options we get the Fire Storm rules.
A sampling of how great this book is. |
The usefulness of the book doesn’t stop there. We get a basic run down of the all the mid and late war forces with their accompanying stats. They also have several stats separated by mid and late war indicators. This is incredibly useful for designing your forces and tactics for tournaments and campaigns. What I really like about this section is you can get a good idea about what will be your stiffest opposition and then plan accordingly.
In “Das Book” they have one page dedicated to building boccage, which I’ve been trying to figure out. This page gave me some great terrain ideas. However, I would have really enjoyed a few more terrain building/hobby presentations in this book. An article I would have found very useful would have been one about building ruins and buildings because no one makes a 1/100 scale ruler.
As I said earlier in this article $10 is a great value in gaming, and makes a great stocking stuffer. Especially since much of the contained material is spread across many of Battlefront’s other Intelligence Briefings. I figure that to get this material al la carte would cost you more than a $100, so the savings is pretty nice. The fact that it is full color and chock full of useful material is an added benefit. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet I would highly recommend you get. You won’t be sorry.
