The BoLS Questionnaire: Goatboy Edition
When did you start playing and why?
I started playing in 1998 took a break for 6 years and came back in a few years ago during the sorta end of 4th edition. I started playing originally because I liked the Chaos Space Marine models and had gotten tired of playing Magic. In fact when I got back into gaming I started with Magic and then moved over 40k again after seeing the cool minis.
Who are your favorite heroes/heroines of fiction?
It is hard as I like the anti hero as I am obviously a child of the 90’s comic generation. I dig Batman and Spiderman a lot. I like the Dog Rider solider guy [Sir Didymus] from Labyrinth too as I think I am a bit ridiculous like him.
Who are your favorite figures from history?
Abraham Lincoln is pretty cool.
Your favorite painter/modder?
Dave Taylor is one of my favorites as he does stuff that I feel you can do too if you work at it. Sometimes the modders are just so insane in their paint skill and design that it becomes too much to try and get yourself too. So I like Dave Taylor’s stuff as I feel I can figure it out more as I look at it.
Your favorite musician/band – what is the best soundtrack for a good game?
I am a big Mash up fan so I have been listening to Best of Bootie lately. Beyond that I am a huge White Stripes fan and like that type of garage rock too. But really the best soundtrack for any wargame is Conan.
The quality you most/least admire in an opponent?
Most Admire – having fun and going with the jokes during the game. Having the ability to laugh at jokes and downfalls during the game makes it a lot more fun. I know when I am losing bad (which can be common hah) I enjoy trying to make it fun and light hearted as best as I can. Especially when I know my bad luck is giving someone else incredible luck.
Least Admire – people getting snide when they are “beating” you. I know that this game can be competitive but when you feel like you are getting “talked” down too it isn’t fun. I know when the game goes tits up on dice rolls there isn’t much you can do so having a little bit of sympathy is usually a good thing.
I read a lot of comics so my favorite authors come from there. I like Warren Ellis a lot. Alan Moore is good even though he has gotten into a creepy place with his writing now. Garth Ennis is pretty cool too and I like most of his stuff. Grant Morrision is a crazy genius and takes multiple readings to get into his zone. I like Brian Michael-Bendis is good too. Greg Rucka is great also and I really dig is crime stuff. Mark Waid is doing some great stuff too.
Painter. You can learn to be a better tactician by just playing the game a lot. Being a better painter takes a lot of work :). Which of course I do so hopefully I can become Super Goatboy or something.
I play video games. My time is pretty cramped with Wife and side work. I have a regular job but I also do art and miniature painting so really I just don’t have as much time as I would like. I also like to hang out with my wife as much as I can so I really only have Thursdays and sometimes Saturdays to get some gaming in. Lucky for me she likes to play video games and we will usually throw down in Halo. I know I will be getting Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 so look for Goatboy on there and watch him lose a lot of games.
What are your favorite movies?
I really dug Scott Pilgrim this last year. The new Harry Potter was great. One of my favorite movies is Fight Club. Anchorman is still up there in my insane library. Hell I call my vehicle Ron Burgundy because it is a burgundy color. I like Labyrinth as well as the Dark Crystal. I like Horror movies too. I will usually watch anything and find something neat in there. Or turn it off haha.
Out of the armies you play, which is your favorite?
Well obviously I like the Space Goats the most. I still have a place for CSM in my heart and currently like throwing down with Fabius Bile and Kharn if I play that army.
What is your personal motto/a favorite quote?
There is so much nonsense that comes out of my mouth it all really depends on the month. Probably my favorite quote is from myself explaining something to BigRed on an Adepticon trip – “It’s rusty cuz it’s dirty.”
You’re known for your weekly army lists – how do you come up with those week after week? How do you keep a fresh approach?
I try to think of things that push boundaries within lists. I look to find things that might work so throwing a lot of them in can get things tested. I have written a ton of lists for people and I just use that to help me create new things or things that might stir conversation.
So, what’s with the goat fascination?
Been nicknamed Goatboy since 1998. It has stuck and I just went with it as I didn’t find it to be a terrible nickname. Plus it really seems to make people upset when I put goat heads on an army. It is also a way to be easy to spot and talk to in any kind of event as obviously I am the idiotic Goatboy and can take a ribbing 🙂
Rumor has it that you write comics as well as paint armies, care to share some of your art?
I have written some 24 hr comics and doing some online webcomics. I usually work with a writer for any comic book work I do. You can see some stuff at http://www.fullofmonkey.com/. Beyond that I do banner art for people too, shoot me an email if you are interested.
You mention a love for CSM. What drew you to them – is it just the models, the fluff, or both?
I like spikes and evil looking things. Usually when I play a game I play the evil side because it is so opposite of how I work in my real life. So the crazy evil monsters running around punching things sounds like a fun way to randomly spend time. Plus those conversions look the coolest.
