This Week in 40K Podcasting – 7/1/2011 – 7/7/2011
Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”
Here is this week’s top 5!
The Overlords – Episode 55 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the Overlords open up their show with some of the latest releases from Forgeworld, the Black Library, and KR Multicase. Next up the guys put out a request to you the listeners to send them in questions for the cast of the show, and then move on to talk about local Overlords news. They close out their first segment with what they have been up to this week, including games played and hobby done. Next up in Sprue Peter, Steve recants his tale of sticker shock over the Finecast Tau Gun Drones to trying to use some bits and make his own and save some money. After that, on Steve’s Roundtable discussion, the boys all talk about what is a good army to use as a Starter Army? What make the best Army to learn the game with? They go into a full discussion on the Space Marine army and what it is and is not good at and why they believe it is a good first army. They then close out the show with an interview with Rob Leigh of Servants of the Imperium, a 40K Web Comic.
Opinion: Overall, this was an outstanding podcast! A lot of good and interesting topics, quite a few laughs as well, and I really enjoyed the conversation about Space Marines being a starter army. I myself plan to teach my sons the game with Space Marines being their first army. Great work guys!
Highlights: This week the Myrtle Beach Wild Bunch opens up the show with “This Week in Gaming”. Neil talks about preparing his Grey Knights for an upcoming tournament and there is a review of the KR Multicase Backpack. Also, they talk more about the preparations for their up-coming tournament. Next, Pat has an interview with Mike Brandt from the NOVA Open, and they talk about terrain at a tournament. Then, Pat interviewed Tim Hudak who won the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Media, PA and won his way to the NOVA open. Following that, Pat continues with an interview with Alex Fennel and they talk about the list be is bringing to the NOVA open. In another interview, Pat talks with John Wolf of WargamesCon and Larry from Hero’s Gaming Blog. Lastly, Pat had an interview with most of the cast of the Screaming Heretic podcast! Then, Neil and Pat have a discussion in the Strategy Muse on Imperial Guard and how to defeat them. Then, in Rules Hersey, Pat and Ben from the forums discuss the Stubborn Rule and how it is or is not affected by the IG Psyker Battle Squad. Next up in Short Shrift, Ciaran from the Overlords joins Pat to talk about Dark Eldar Grotesques. The crew then closes out the show with a massive “The List” segment where they build 5 tournament lists!
Opinion: This was podcast was everything I have come to expect from the 11th Company, jam packed with lists, tactics, interviews, and more. Another gem and a great listen to for anyone!
40K UK – Episode 10 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week Dave rocks out with a massive 4 hour show! After some announcements, the show opens up with “Operation Codex” and this week and the boys try a bit of a different format as they take a very detailed look at Codex Orks and some specific units from that Codex. Next up, in the “Big Fight” we move on to round two and this week the guys pit the Swarmlord versus Mephiston! Then, the boys go on to “Rankings Countdown” and the guys discuss what Rankings HQ is and who the top 16 players in the UK are and what lists they run, in a great amount of detail I might add. They close out the show this week as Dave interviews Mike Marlow, the 8th Ranked player in the UK and they discuss his Dark Eldar list.
Opinion: This was a pretty good podcast, overflowing this week with lists and tactics! I really enjoyed hearing a rundown of the top 16 list in the UK, that was really awesome and a real treat for a tactics minded player like me. It might drag on for those of you not so tactically interested so be warned, but overall, I highly recommend this podcast, great work guys!
Deepstrike Radio – Episode 17 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week, the guys open up the show with a bit of satire and then move on to what they have been doing in the hobby. Chase, I wanted to send you my condolences on the passing of your grandmother. They then move on to talk about the new Contemptor Pattern Dreadnaught and other releases from Forgeworld (Sweet!) and the Black Library. Next up was a comedy piece where Deepstrike Radio responds accusations of racism from none other than Ghazghkull. Next up in the Armory the boys give a detailed review of the story of Chaos Renegades, those that have fallen to Chaos after the Horus Hersey like the Astral Claws and the Soul Drinkers. So, after a break, the guys then go one to build three separate lists for each of their favorite Renegade factions. Next, in the Hobby Trenches they guys talk about conversions for your Chaos forces. They close out the show in the Briefing Room talking about Forgeworld rules and models and can they be used in friendly games.
Opinion: This podcast is one of my hidden gems in the sea of 40K podcasts out there today. Each and every episode has taught me so much about the fluff of the game, and ever since Big Jim has joined the cast the show has really taken off. This week’s show is great; I loved it and loved hearing about the back story of the Renegade Space Marines. I even loved the Gazzy cal in, although I never thought that Orks had a Jamaican accent. Great work guys!
40K Radio – Episode 22 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week, the gang is missing Rik, so Romeo and Kyle run the show together and open up with a little about what they have done lately. Next, they go into some news and talk Necron and 40K 6th Edition rumors. Up next in the Freebootaz Rapid Fire, the guys answer as many questions as they can in the 10 minutes from the live Freebootaz listeners. Then, Kyle gives a detailed review of the Black Library audiobook The Madness Within. Next Romeo talks about some more listener emails the show received about the GW price hike. Romeo and Kyle then get into a pretty good conversation about the prices of the game. They finish out that segment by talking some cool alternate “House Rules” that some of the Bootaz have sent in. After that, in Kinghammer Tactica Kyle talks about the top 5 Ork Units he would take in a list. Next up Romeo then goes into a review of the game Infinity, some other miniatures wargame. Lastly, the boys have an interview with Alessio Cavatore and talk to him about his GW days and what he has moved on to now.
Opinion: I have mixed feeling about this episode, and this podcast as a whole to be honest. For starters, when you are 40K Radio, it used to be ‘all 40K, all the time’, but it has become very clear to me that this is no longer the case with this new 40K Radio cast. It really makes me miss the golden age of Spencer, Phil, Scott and Chippley. I was surprised how much of this podcast was dedicated to non-40K games. The interview with Alessio was good and one would expect he would talk about Warpath and that is cool, but more and more of this show is either a long Battlefoam commercial or talking less and less 40K and more ‘other’ games. I do not like the direction this show has taken. So unless you are one of the few diehard 40K Radio fans, or really want to hear from Alessio on Warpath, skip this one this week. I mourn the old 40K Radio.
