This Week in 40K Podcasting – 8/5/2011 – 8/11/2011
Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”
Here is this week’s top 5!
The Independent Characters – Episode 34
Highlights: This week the guys are talking about bringing 40K home and coverage from the Bay Area Open. They open up their show this week with some shout outs and move right into talking about some hobby progress updates. This included some good talk about building custom models. They then move on to talk about the games that they have played lately. The guys then move on to talk about the main topic of this week’s show, “How to bring 40K Home.” The boys talk about home play of 40K, and they start off by discussing all sorts of gaming table and playing surfaces options. Then then move on to talk about terrain, mostly how to store and transport terrain with limited storage space. They then move on to talk about some of the more permit things you can have for a more dedicated game room. They also talk about some other considerations, like what people should bring with them when coming to a game night, including money not in $20 bills. In their next segment the guys continue on with home gaming and they discuss some of the events you can run at home. They talked about some potential for ‘House Rules’ and home based tournaments and campaigns! They also talk about running Apocalypse events as well! They then talk about the extended gaming experience, running things like a blog or a YouTube channel for example. Following that, the guys played some interviews from the Bay Area Open, starting up with Reese the TO of the tournament and moved into a conversation with Big Jim!
Opinion: This was a great podcast, as some of you know I mostly play at home. So this was an episode I was looking very forward to. It offers up a lot of good tips for the person looking to open up their home to gaming. As always, great work guys! I really enjoyed this episode!
Highlights: This week the Myrtle Beach Wild Bunch is back and opens up their show with “This Week in Gaming”. They started off with news on the ‘Ard Boys scenarios and moved on to talk about the games they have been playing. Next up in Pat’s Corner, Pat continues his interview with Alex Fennel and they discuss the US’s ETC army lists. Up next, Pat talked to Caillou from the German ETC team and Mike Collins from the Wales ETC Team about their armies and some of the tactics they hope to use. Then, the gang takes some time to talk about the upcoming NOVA Open and their plans for the event. Remember, they plan to have their live coverage, and they talk some about how they plan to pick their third team partner. Next, Pat talked to Doug about his Ork list that took best Ork General in the US Throne of Skulls. Then was their usual community segment where they announce some great tournaments coming up in the near future. They then close out the show with one of my favorite segments “The Game Plan”. This week the guys talked about non-standard drop pod Space Wolves list and pit it up against a Calvary Daemon list, the meanest of Grey Knights lists, and an Ork Can Wall list!
Opinion: Overall, this was another great show from the 11th Company. Ia m so focused on ‘Ard Boyz this year and to hear some of their plans of the scenarios has been immensely helpful! And the Game Plan is by far my favorite of their new segments, great work guys!
Highlights: After some shoutouts and introductions to the show, the guys open up with Operation Codex, where they finish up their trilogy the Grey Knights Elite slots, with the nasty GK Dreadnaughts and a bunch of tactics of why to use them! They are awesome, be ready for them! Next up on the Q&A-Team, the boys tackle a question about how to beat the dreaded Leafblower IG list and still be competitive on the tournament scene versus everyone else. Then, Dave has an interview with Alex West, the former English ETC Team Captain and they discuss his great Space Wolves list. Next up was the Big Fight Semi-Finals and this week we have the Swarmlord versus Fateweaver! To close out the show, Dave has an interview with Rob Madeley and they discuss his nasty Chaos Daemons list.
Opinion: Overall, this show has quite quickly become one of my favorites, Dave and the boys put on a great show each and every week and this was one of their best. With Grey Kinght talk, tactics for the IG player and those playing against them, to really cool Space Wolf ideas, this podcast is a great resource for the tournament focused player. Great work guys!
Highlights: This week the guys open up their show with some light gaming news and some community adds. They also cover some new releases from the Black Library. Next up they moved on to local Overlords news and they talk about their week in the hobby, which included modeling, painting, and games played. After that, in Steve’s Round Table, the boys discuss a recent Overlords Event, Overlords Fun Day! They mostly talk about the games that they played there for the event, which sounded like it was a blast. Next up was the Overlords In-Box and this week they discussed an email from David Ploss about Gamesday Spain and spending enough money to get things like re-rolls in the tournament, as opposed to say free GW product instead. Then, they close out the show with a great discussion in Dagmire’s Tavern about how to apply a theme or a story to your army through the medium of painting.
Opinion: This was a great podcast, mostly for the last segment of the show. I came to the game as a competitive and tournament centered player but as I continue the hobby, the more I am getting story and fluff focused. The idea of being able to tell your armies story just through some simple painting techniques was really a revelation to me and something I plan to implement in my armies. Thanks guys!
Deepstrike Radio – Episode 19 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week, Big Jim is away at the Bay Area Open and was not on this week’s show (save for a pre-recorded segment). Chris and Chase open up the show with what they have been doing this week, which included some Forgeworld models coming in! They also had some announcements and some news, which reviewed some new releases from some ‘other’ modeling companies that could be used in 40K. In the next segment, the Librarius, the boys go deep in the full story of the Word Bearers and their fall from a loyalist chapter to chaos in the Horus Hersey! Next, the boys talk about some of their lists for the Word Bearers, both pre and post Hersey. Next up in the Hobby Trenches, they boys discussed Army ADD, and how jump armies might not be the best, and to learn to love the army you play. They close out the show with a Briefing Room report where Chase and Jim talk about the Bay Area Open. Jim gives his detailed review of this awesome event, including talking about the armies that took the top spots and meeting up with the Independent Characters!
Opinion: This is a gem of a podcast, it really is. I am amazed at the level of knowledge and depth the 40K story really is. I did not know much about the Word Bearers prior to this podcast, and know I feel quite educated in their story and the army as a whole. Thanks guys, this was another good podcast.
