This Week in 40K Podcasting – 9/10/2011 – 9/16/2011
Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”
Here is this week’s top 5!
Highlights: This week the crew is only three strong with Cowboy Kenny, Uncle Buck, and the Stig. They then open up with some hobby progress news, the joy of the Tyranid Gargoyle model, and model glue! They talk mostly about what they have been doing lately in their hobby before moving on to the games that they have been playing and a recent tournament that Kenny attended. They then review the new Warmachine box set briefly before moving on to talk about some of the changes to their forums. Next up was an interview with Jay, the TO of Da Boyz GT. They talk a bit about the tournament including the comp for the event. Next up, the guys go into a fully detailed review of the Sisters of Battle Codex, beginning with their one word overview. They then begin talk about what it is about this Codex that has changed, and in most cases it was not for the better. There was quite a lot they had to say bad about this codex and very little good about it. If you have read it, you would know why! They then move on to talk about buying and selling armies, and the idea of Army Flipping. They talk about those guys who build the latest and greatest armies, only to drop them for the new hotness. They then move on to talk to Jay from DaBoyz GT again about the Tyranid army he took to Adepticon this year and did well with. He also recanted his tales from this year’s ETC, including some details of the games he played. To close out the show the guys give a brief overview of Dystopian Wars from Spartan Games.
Opinions: This was the best podcast of the week in my opinion; jam packed with 40K goodness. Yeah, they hit on o few non-40K subjects; however their hobby sections and review of the Sisters of Battle made this my top pick for the week! Not to mention the nasty trend of those Army Flippers out there, this was a great conversation and a great podcast overall! Thanks guys!
Highlights: This week the Overlords are missing Steve, who was out sick, for the first time ever! Whatever will I do??? However, the boys motor on and open up talking about the Space Marine game. They then move on to some Forgeworld updates before talking local Overlords news, including their YouTube contest and the Double Take event they are running. They move on to what they have been up to lately in the hobby and the games they have been playing. Next up in the ‘Meat Locker’, Ciaran and the crew addresses the question of ‘should I take first turn or not’. There are a lot of different was to look at this question, with different armies and tactics, and the guys explore them. Next up was a new satire segment called ‘Dear Dagmire’, and they crew fields some questions from the fans. This was pretty funny, even if it was a bit different from their normal format. Then, in Team Overlords, we hear from Ben who is interviewing Chris from ‘Roll with It’ and they discuss the upcoming Team Tournament at Maelstrom Games. Chris basically gives his tactics and strategies going into this event with hopes of doing well. They close out the show with Dagmire and Steve, via pre-recording, giving a rundown of the Sisters of Battle Codex. This did swing into a bit for a well-deserved rant after a rundown of each unit.
Opinion: This could have easily my favorite podcast of the week. It was different without Steve there, but the guys were still a lot of fun and very informative. The Meat Locker was a great discussion and Dear Dagmire had me in tears at some points. And I really did appreciate Dagmire and Steve’s insight on the Sisters of Battle. Overall, a great show this week!
Highlights: This week the guys open up the show with “This Week in Gaming” and talk about the most recent RTT that they attended at Hobbit Hobby. They start by talking about the venue some and then moved on to talk about the 4th edition missions that were used for this tournament. They then move on to talk about the lists that they took to the event before talking about each of their rounds in details and their outcomes. For those curious, Neil took 1st place, Pat 4th and Steven 5th. Next up in “Pat’s Corner”, Pat has an interview with Doc Dragon and they talk about his Imperial Guard all foot list made up of all female models. Pat then talks to Bob, one of the TOs for the Battle for Salvation and Jay from Da Boyz GT. They then move on to talk about the “List of the Week” and they discuss some of the entries for the Terminator centered army list contest. First, they talk about a tri Landraider list with Terminators and Librarians with Gate of Infinity and Null Zone. They then talk about a Blood Angels Terminator list with 2 Land Raiders and some jump pack Marines with some Reclusiarchs. Next up was a Black Templars Terminator list, with Blessed Hull Landraiders and a Shrike/Lysander Codex Marines list. Lastly they cover another Blood Angels list with some Multi-Melta attack bikes, a Deathwing Dark Angels list and another Codex Marines list.
Opinion: I always love haring about the guys and their tournament coverage, and this was some pretty good coverage. The interviews, as always were top notch and I hope to make one of those events next year (new baby girl will take me out of the national events this year). And List of the weeks is creeping up there to be yet another favorite segment of mine! A good podcast overall, check it out!
40K UK – Episode 21 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week is a monster of a podcast, a full 4+ hour show and it focuses mostly on the Ribble Rumble tournament they most recently attended. They open up the show however talking about the UK GT News and update, including pricing for the event. Next up was their coverage of the Ribble Rumble, an 1850 Point, two-day, 5 game event! They open up by giving a full rundown of the lists that they took to the tournament and some of the strategies in making those lists. They then move on to talk about their first round games in details, which consisted of some player challenges! This was followed by an interview with Dave’s first round opponents and they talk about the game. They then move on to talk about each individual round of the tournament from there, talking about the lists that they faced, the tactics they used in the game, and the outcomes of those games. We also get to hear some interviews with Dave’s opponents after their games. They close out the show with an interview with the tournament winner, Chris ‘the accountant’ Green, who took the tournament with a Tau army of all things!
Opinion: 40K UK’s tournament coverage is outstanding, and I love hearing it each and every week. This was a great show, a bit on the long side, but a great show. I can tell you Dave and his crew makes me want to move the family to Nottingham! A good show guys, great work!
Deepstrike Radio – Episode 21 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the guys are without Jim sadly (Jim, my best wishes man!) but motor on without him. They move on to talk some about the news and the release of Space Marine! They also talk a bit about some of the games that they have played lately. They also announce new Deepstrike Radio T-Shirts that are coming! They finish off the first segment with some new product releases, Forgeworld, and alternative IG minis. They then move on to the main topic for the show this week, Death Skulls Orks! They start off by talking about the design of the Ork Codex itself, and then move on to talk about the story of the Ork clans and the Death Skulls specifically, their life as looters and builders. Next up in ‘The Armoury”, the boys design so lists to help fit the Death Skulls story. They give detailed rundowns of the lists that they wrote for this particulate Ork Clan. Up next, the guys did a review of the Portable Warfare’s Sergeant Bag! They do a full run down of the product itself as the less expensive alternative to some of the other army transports out there. In the last segment, “the Briefing Room”, Chris tells us about his tournament experience with his new Blood Angel army. He participated in a 750 Point, 5-Game tournament and he talks about some of the armies that he played against and his overall performance.
Opinion: This was a good show this week. I have to say I found myself wanting to know more about the Death Skulls but I do not know that there is all that much out there on them. So the guys did a pretty good overview of them. Overall, a good show, keep it up guys! And again, Jim, best wishes man, hope all is well!
