Goatboy 40k – Let’s Talk about some Necron List
Goatboy here again – looking at some of the Necron thoughts and turning around to the machine minded way.
Of course things could change if a FAQ tweaks things (Here is looking at you Nids), but I have a feeling the bulk of the army will easily survive the any FAQ nonsense and still come out extremely strong. Especially if things move away from games of Box 40k.
So with that in mind let’s look at some list building thoughts on some ideas that might be worth wile. The HQ choices for the book is a weird bit as it is really full of utility more then anything else. Each option gives you something neat and it really pushes the idea that Special Characters are needed to get an army running properly. Right now I feel the only HQ to survive any FAQ nonsense with the same strength level is most likely Imotekh. He is one of those kind of force multiplier options in the book. He is designed to make your army more survivable as well as give you a somewhat random decent bonus (Njal like lightning). I think his ability to protect your swarms will be needed in most games and presents one of the sadly “You will see in almost every Necron army” options.
So let’s start with him as the initial start. From there we want to add in a Cryptek to give us the lovely option of one reroll per phase. Thus completing our constant Night fight objective. So you will make him a Harbinger of Eternity with Chronometron.
I know I need a Res Orb too so I will probably add in a Necron Overlord to help create the Bunker of scoring I plan on adding in later. So a Necron Overlord plus Ressurection Orb to add to the Court.
From there I need to add some troop options because you need to score objectives. Let’s look at a fat blob of the fully maxed out Necron Warriors. This will give us a nice base to add the HQ plus Court too and allow for the Storm Lord to work his magic as long as you can. With the other options I plan on adding there shouldn’t be an issue with keeping him protect as your opponent will have to deal with the Swarm. I will also add in a Ghost Ark they can’t use and plan on it being a objective contestor/regeneration machine for the fat blob.
I still need another choice for a troop option and most likely I will add in two 10 man Warrior Squads with two Ghost Arks to help shore up my scoring potential. The ability to fly fast and far will allow me to place them in reserves and come out as needed to go grab something special.
From there I need to add the meat to the above potatoes of the army. This comes in with one of the most discussed units in the game – Scarabs and the Scarab Farmers. I do think there will be an FAQ on these guys – but still feel they will be good even if they are changed up. They are going to be a huge unit that takes a lot of real estate which is always a good thing. I champion Rock units that are designed to screw with your opponent for 3-4 turns. Anything that in a sense shortens your opponents game plans by making you focus on them for 3-4 turns is a win the Goatboy playbook.
So let’s start with a 10 man blob of Scarbs plus 9 Tomb Spyders to add more nonsense to the mix. If the FAQ somehow screws the ability to go beyond the maximum size of the bug blob then we can do some tweaks to create 3 smaller units of Scarabs to add on too.
Let’s see where that puts us.
HQ:
Imotekh – 225pts
Royal Court – Cryptek, Harbringer of Eternity, Chronometron, Necron Lord, Resurrection Orb – 105pts
Troops:
Necron Warriors X 20, Ghost Ark – 375pts
Necron Warriors X 10, Ghost Ark – 245pts
Necron Warriors X 10, Ghost Ark – 245pts
FA:
Scarabs X 10 – 150pts
Heavy:
Canoptek Spyders X 3, Gloom Prizm X 1 – 165pts
Canoptek Spyders X 3, Gloom Prizm X 1 – 165pts
Canoptek Spyders X 3, Gloom Prizm X 1 – 165pts
This hits at 1840pts right now. Depending on what you do or what kind of tournaments you play this is either where you stop or where you start to tweak things to get more punch in the list as needed. So with that in mind – Let’s minimize the two flying and scoring options on the troop choices.
Necron Warriors X 5, Ghost Ark – 180pts
Necron Warriors X 5, Ghost Ark – 180pts
This saves us 130 pts and we can start to look at other options to get to 1850. Right now we are sitting at 140 so we can see where else we can trim. I have a feeling the Spyders are going to get a tweak so I think I will plan on dropping a batch of 3. 5 Bases a turn will mean most likely I will be at 25 by the time I decide to end the bug dance and come at you Bro.
This drops another 165pts and brings us 305 which is a good amount to look at where we can tweak things. If you are going up to 2000 then you have lots of fun options too.
So let’s see.

Imotekh – 225pts
Royal Court – Cryptek, Harbringer of Eternity, Chronometron, Necron Lord, Resurrection Orb – 105pts

Heavy:
Canoptek Spyders X 3, Gloom Prizm X 1 – 165pts
Canoptek Spyders X 3, Gloom Prizm X 1 – 165pts
This leaves us at 1545 points right now. The question is where do we go from here? I don’t think we need another troop option at this time. Your troops are designed to hold home objectives and push forward from reserve as needed so really you don’t need more. They could easily change to Night Scythes if needed but until a model rears its fugly metallic head then there isn’t a point to really speculate and design.
So right now we have access to another HQ, 3 Elites, 3 Troops, 2 more Fast Attack choices, and one Heavy in the force org. So let’s see where we can go from there.
Canoptek Wraiths are interesting. Fearless with 2 wounds and a 3+ inv save is pretty neat and it something to look into. The ability of Jump Infantry and ignoring all terrain is also another bonus option. Also with 2 wounds you can start to create some Wound Allocation nonsense that all the “good” armies seem to be able to do.
FA:
Canoptek Wraiths X 3, Coil Whip X 1, Particle Caster X 1 – 120pts
This gives you some options to hold up a Blood Talon dread or other nonsense that might get out of hand. The ability to hide some wounds as well is another good option mixed with a rather cheap unit.
This leaves us with 185 points to look at and I am thinking it might be interesting to add in another HQ to run with the Wraiths as a psuedo Counter Assault unit. The Destroyer Lord won’t be ignore the terrain like these guys but he is still a boss in combat.
HQ:
Destroyer Lord, Sempiternal Weave, Mindshackle Scarabs – 160pts
This leaves 15 points which could go somewhere – maybe another Scarab. Is this list the bee knees? Not sure as I want to test it versus Darkwynn. I think it has merits and I think even with the upcoming FAQ’s there is still power in the massed swarm of bugs. 5 attacks on the charge is pretty sweet bit of frosting on the cake.
List as is.

Points 1835
I know we normally do 2000 point lists but with Adepticon being the next big event and a lot of other events hitting at 1850 points wise it is always a good thing to start there when creating a list. I do think there are other options in the codex that might work too. It really depends on when those models come out.
Fixed the points issues – Got mixed up because we are seeing such large blogs of them – thought I could push them up to 15 – will see what the FAQ does to them.
