I recently talked about the Dark Age books and showed you a bunch of pics of their pretty studio-painted minis. Now lets take a closer look at an actual product. Today I have what might be favorite mini in the Dark Age range: Mongo.

As you can see, this behemoth is cast in resin (well mostly). He’s a big dude who can barely fit in his blister.

And here’s everything that comes in that blister. I use the brown cloth in the background for all my unboxings because the squares are almost exactly an inch on either side. That should help you get a sense for scale. Even though Mongo here is pretty hunched he’s still over 2″ high. And he’s almost as wide.

Mongo’s tiny bizarre little head is a great way to show off the quality of this resin cast. Look at how deep his mouth is. In fact the whole area around his head shows a remarkable amount of undercutting without a loss of detail. I’m amazed they were able to do this whole area as a single piece. I would have expected to see the head and possibly the chest plate as separate pieces.

Here’s another close-up.

And now a fist. Its almost like they’re trying to show off just how much depth they can get in the recesses on this guy. That cavity is still so deep that the strap just vanishes out of sight.

And here’s his other hand. Five individual fingers and a big flat chunk of concrete behind them all cast on the same piece.

This is the one metal component in the kit: the sprue for Mongo’s back spikes.

And here’s a Dark Age card, for those of you who have never seen one before.

~ As I’m sure you can tell by now, I’m really impressed by the quality here. In addition to the skill in casting, the pieces are also pretty clean. As the pictures show, there’s still some flash to trim off here and there. But overall, the mold lines are minimal. But do you know what the best part is? This massive guy is only $24.99. And that’s about par for most of the large minis in the Dark Age range. If you want to see more you can check out the others at the Cool Mini or Not Store.
