Goatboy here again chatting about 40k and my own thoughts on the ocean of nonsense that awaits us in the coming months.  Todays topic – prices and 6th.

We have a price increase coming down the line along with a new ruleset so look for a rather chaotic couple of months. The question I have is what does this even mean for the hobby?

Let’s tackle the price increase first. We all want more for our money. I am not going to try to fluff it to you with the whole – its a hobby and hobby’s are expensive. I think the price increases are always bunk when you are one of those players who constantly likes to build new armies and try out different flavors of the month. This increase will just mean that I will be a lot more careful with my hard earned dollar.

Now of course people are crying out about leaving the game and moving onto other pastures. I for one won’t because I have too much invested in this game. I currently own 12 or so armies and enough pieces for 4 to 5 other armies if I felt like painting a crap ton of them in pink. The only way I will leave the game is if 6th edition blows chunks so hard core that I don’t even feel like playing it. I know there are other games but in reality the costs are close to the same all across the board. I know some games give you more but in the end we all spend about the same amount of money on a game. Whether it is a card game, a plastic monster game, or just some other type of grim dark fight to the death.

So with that in mind I will keep positive until 6th edition comes out. I won’t be looking at starting a new build any time soon due to the costs and chances for 6th to flip the “meta” over on its head. I think that most likely more bodies will be needed for the game so look for needing less big vehicle kits to compete in this landscape of 40k. Also at this time how many people need to buy a Storm Raven as well?

There is a reason I play counts as for my Goats as it gives me the ability to circumvent the need to have multiple versions of the same unit/kit. Will we see more home brew chapters to help alleviate the strain on our wallets? What about more other companies models in your regular 40k armies? Without GW putting their haphazard stamp on the tournament scene are we going to start to see more “3rd” party models hitting the table top and rolling 6’s like a boss?

So with the price hike in mind let’s look at 6th edition. The hope is the game continues to be good with enough avenues to tweak into a tournament setting. This change will most likely allow the TO’s to organize a complete tournament packet that will allow all events to follow the same sort of guidelines. This will let Player A from the West coast come over to the East and have no worries about rules, tweaks, and other issues in an event. Do you think they will allow allies in a tournament? Hell no. What about random terrain? I think not. People forget that in reality if the rules don’t make sense for something we can always not play it that way. It is pretty simple to take the default rules, tweak it’s nippies and call it “Tournament 40k”.

40k has a lot more limits on units and options then Fantasy. 40k doesn’t have the ability to create 50 man units in every army. Yes some have that option but in reality most armies deal with 10 man units followed by a vehicle. When you think of armies in that sense then unless they overhaul every codex (not likely) we will have the same sort of army size mixed with new units due to rules changes invalidating old builds. I don’t think will see the major cost increase Fantasy saw as the game is pretty well locked in the options departments for every book. Will troops most likely get more important? They are important now so I don’t expect that to get any less then what you need during a normal 5th edition game.

I hope to see more rules come out in the coming weeks as well as little glimpses of 6th in the new White Dwarf with the flyers breathing down our necks. We’ve all been here before, and we all came out ok.

How many folks do you think will *really* throw in the towel on 6th? I bet its almost none.
