Goatboy’s 40k Thoughts – Fateweaver, Skulltaker, and Crushers – OH MY!

Lately I have thought it is time to go beyond the normal curve of competitive 40k and start to think in different directions to deliver a beating. Lets take a second look at Bloodcrushers.

It comes from the idea that if everyone is using the same lists to win isn’t that exciting.  So this lead me to think of different ways to try and make a competitive Daemon army that isn’t some kind of MC smash list or Dog Bomb.  Plus it adds a whole layer of fun when you beat up on a competitive player with some random junk (the JWolf special).

So I started to think what units could I use to try and create a different list.  A client was chatting with me about using Blood Crushers again and this got me to thinking about ways to get a bunch of metal monsters in deep into your opponents business.  His initial idea was to recreate the crusher star using 3 crushers and then 3-4 heralds of Khorne to amp up it’s average Toughness to 5 and get a very fast and deadly unit on the table top.  I went a bit further and thought – let’s use that unit to help deliver pin point/low scatter Deep strikes and try to save Grinders from opponent long range fire by having them delivered deep into their business.

So with that – let’s look at this 1850 list.  I have most of the parts (or at least the parts to build and convert) so I hope to bring this after ATC is over with.  Client and my own work needs to get done before then hah.

Will start at the top with some HQ options.

HQ: Fateweaver

This guy is needed if you want to be effective with the Grim.  He does a lot for your army and I have never found him to not be useful.  Plus the Warpstorm reroll can win you games at times.  Make sure to keep a herald on foot handy.  Slaanesh or Khorne Heralds work well as they are effective with no gifts.

HQ: Skulltaker, Juggernaut

This guy is a tank and with the Grim he will take a lot of firepower to bring down.  He also has Eternal Warrior which is great for eating up a Wraith Knight or two.

HQ: Herald of Khorne, Juggernaut of Khorne, Greater Locus of Wrath, Greater Gift, Lesser Gift

These are the gruesome twosome.  They are  there to go, punch stuff and take names.  the Greater Locus will give the unit hatred so it will push over Skulltaker’s Locus.  Plus they will have a good amount of attacks, AP 2, and can dish out some pain.  Hopefully some FNP or reroll inv saves will be the Greater Gifts rolled.

Elites: Bloodcrushers of Khorne X 3, Banner of Blood

I had 10 points left over thus we have the Banner of Blood. These guys are your meat to hold the Poorboy of doom you have with the Crusher Star. Plus their Icon will allow the later stuff to only scatter d6 inches.  Hooray for changing up who Khorne hates now.

Troops: Plague Bearers X 10

Nothing to see here – they score.  I will probably end up throwing a unit or two of Pink Horrors for less spamyness but this is probably where you should start.

Heavy: Soul Grinder, Baleful Torrent, Mark of Nurgle

These guys are the two surprises that come in after a turn or two.  They will drop in close, most likely have stealth and shrouding when getting shot at and be a pain in the rear.  Just be careful in how you place them and they should hopefully cause enough – oh crap moments for your opponents for your crusher star to split up, engage multiple units, and give you under pants profits.

Heavy: Daemon Prince, Mark of Tzeentch, Wings, Armor, Exalted Gift, Greater Gift, Lvl 3 Psyker

Here is the jack of all trades that will help support Fateweaver.  It’s design is meant to be back up for everything your army needs.  You need spells – got it dude.  You need the Grim?  Sure I got that too.  Plus if he rolls a 1 for his Exalted Gift he gets a free +2 Str Staff that can put the hurt on a lot of stuff.  Biomancy or Telepathy are the psychic powers you roll on with your opponents army determining which one you start with.  I think Endurance on the Crusher Star is a great start to a balanced breakfest so start there.

Here is the list all nice and pretty.

If you wanted to go to 2000 points you could add another Crusher or another set of troops.  I also think 3 Grinders might be good – but you need that Exalted Gift somewhere so you would need to make a herald be the Librarian which is kind of a pain as the unit is somewhat wasted.  But yeah – this list tries something different that isn’t dogs and MC’s trying to punch you in the junk.
There are some Mono nurgle versions with the Flies and friends falling in.  I think this might be good and give you an interesting game as well.  I just miss using my crushers and wanted to try and use them.  Thanks to my client Don for bringing this up and making me rethink the armies I try to bring.  I forgive him for making me paint 3 Dragons.  I am up to 11 total now.
