Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”

Here is this week’s top 5!

Highlights:  This week the guys are back with part two of their coverage of Codex Dark Angels!  They opened up the show with what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby.  This included what they do during the summer months in the hobby and gaming in the heat of a Texas summer.  Next, it was back to their review of Codex Dark Angels, starting off with the Elite section of the book.  They highlighted each unit, including Company Veteran Squads and Deathwing Knights.  Next, they moved on to the Fast Attack choices like Ravenwing Support Squadrons, Black Knights, and the Nephilim Jetfighter!  After a break, the boys looked at the Heavy Support section, which was mostly a re-hash of every other Space Marine Codices we have ever seen.  With one exception, the Land Speeder Vengeance!  They then took a look at the book overall and pick out the stand out units and upgrades, like the Standard of Devastation, and the issues that Heldrakes and Tau give this army.  They also discussed the Allies available to the Dark Angels and some nasty combo with them, and some common DA builds.

Opinion:  The second installment of Codex Dark Angels was as much as I had hoped for; quite enlightening and very entertaining.  The boys have really nailed down a good format for reviewing armies and each of them have been just outstanding.  I have a feeling that the Dark Angels will be making a quite return to the competitive scene and this was a great review.  Easily my top pick for the week, check this one out!

Highlights:  This week the guys opened up the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they discussed the games they have been playing lately.  This included some thought on how to build a Daemon list to beat Tau.  Next, Eric was back with ‘Tactical Terrain’ and this week he is reporting from the Progressive RTT he recently attended.  HE gave a rundown of each of his three games and interviewed his opponents when available.  In the ‘Community Segment’ we heard from the Blood City Brawl GT 2013, Michael from ‘Grayed Out Productions’ and his custom dice bags, and Mike Brandt from the Nova Open and they did some Q&A on the Nova Open, Josh from the ‘Blood City Brawl’ and more!  Next, in anew segment called ‘SimHammer’, they discussed math-hammer on the tabletop and focused on the best challenge characters in the game.  Next, Chandler from ‘Feats of Blades’ let a discussion about the missions at his event and why they did some of the things that they did.  They also discussed the logistics of terrain and the venue for the events.  They closed out the show with their ‘List Building’ segment where they build an Ork Nob list.

Opinion:  This week’s episode was just full of great 40K content this week.  It was quite interesting to hear the boys muse about how to build a Daemons list to battle the Tau nemesis.  The new segment of ‘Simhammer’ has interesting possibilities, and I look forward to more from this guy.  It would be nice to know who it is giving the editorial though.  And lastly, the look at the ‘Feast of Blades’ mission was quite fascinating to hear their thought processes.  Overall, a great show once again!

Highlights: This week is one of my favorite shows that the boys do; a list building episode with the Eldar!  They opened up the show with news and rumors, including the Apocalypse release and the formations lack of discounts.  They also discussed some of the rumors on the Supplements that may be coming out, including the Black Legion for CSM.  They moved on to what they have been up to lately in gaming, and some of the boys got to try or the new Iyanden Supplement.  Next, the boys moved on to their ‘List Building’ segment where they built a 1500 Point Eldar list.  They first decided what kind of Eldar list to build, and they decided to build a list featuring a lot of the new models.  So this included at least one Wraithknight!  They then moved on to Flyer defense, and they decided upon the Crimson Hunter.  They then moved on to the difficult question of which HQs to take, which they decided on the Asurmen.  To accompany Asurmen they added in two units of Dire Avengers as Troops with upgrades, and a squad of Guardians for some versatility.  They then moved on to add in a unit of Warp Spiders and some War Walkers.  They added in a Autarch for some reserve manipulations and for fun.  They then reviewed the list that they built and discussed how they believed it would do, and made some changes to the final list.  They closed out the show with a very brief hobby progress segment.

Opinion:  I love these show, I really do.  The list building episodes the guys do are easily my favorites, and hearing some of their thoughts on building a competitive Eldar list were just fascinating.  I found it really interesting that they went all the way through building a list and then altered it so greatly in the end.  You’ll have to hear for yourself.  A good show guys!

Highlights:  This week the boys are back and they opened up the show with the ‘Q&A-Team’ where they fielded questions from their fans.  This included questions on ‘Where have Deathstars gone?’, ‘Do vehicles lose a hull point when they fail a dangerous terrain test?’, ‘What was their favorite edition, 5th or 6th?’, and much, much more.  Next, in ‘Operation Codex’ the boys sit down to talk about ‘Ravenwing’!  They try to build the most competitive lists that they can with a Ravenwing theme.  They start off with the HQ choice of Azrael and a Command Squad.  They then moved on to the Troop Choices, which was bikes, bikes, and more bikes!  They also added in a Land Raider, some Black Knights, and a few more goodies.  They then discussed how they thought the list would perform against some of the top army builds out there today: The double Heldrake, Tau, Eldar, etc.

Opinion:  A pleasingly short show this week (especially for me with two weeks of vacation ahead of me).  This one only hit on two topics and the guys gave them both all of the detail and care that they usually do.  The ‘Q&A-Team’ segment was full of great information.  The Ravenwing segment was equally insightful, tying in well with the Heroic 28s podcast.  I’d highly recommend this one as a companion to their review for a really good look at this army.  Nice work guys!

The Independent Characters – 81

Highlights:  This week the boys are joined by Chad their local ‘Death Watch’ expert to discuss the role-playing game by Fantasy Flight!  The guys opened up the show with ‘the Work Bench’ where they discussed their hobby progress and discussed the games they have played.  This included some discussion about the Apocalypse release, the models, the books, and the terrain kits.  Next, the guys sat down to talk about the RPG ‘Death Watch’!  They opened by discussing the back story of who the ‘Death Watch’ are, which marines join the Death Watch, how they are chosen, and how they serve.  They then moved on to discuss the sector of space where the game takes place and some of the back story of what is going on there and what time period it is played in.  They then moved on to talk about Character Creation process, which included ‘race/classes’ or Chapter and Specialties.  They then talked about the ‘stats of a character, and the difference from other 40K RPG games, how some of the implants work, the armor they wear, and much, much more.  They then talked about ‘renown’ and ‘experience’ within the game and how to progress in character level.  They then move on to the combat system, how it work, how damage works, and much more.  They then moved on to discuss how ‘Death Watch’ actually plays and their experience playing the game.  They then moved on to talk about the material available for this games, the books and the supplements that seemed to be best for playing in this universe.  They closed out the show with an interview with Robert Pace who is one of the TOs of the ‘Golden Throne’ event, being held in the Bay Area.  They talked about the event, what they have planned, and much more.

Opinion:  Ok, while this show was solely dedicated to an RPG, it was a 40K RPG so I think it still has it merits.  ‘Death Watch’ is without a doubt a great game and the boys did an admirable job describing the game, the setting, and how the game is played.  This was a nice topper for the week, a little light on 40K talk, but enough story and background to make it quite enjoyable.  Great show guys!
