Infinity News – Dire Foes

Ian from the Wargaming Trader here again. There was lots of Infinity news from Gencon, but the stand-out for me was the new Dire Foes range of characters/scenario packs.

We’re still waiting for complete details, but so far this looks like a set of five boxes, each with it’s own theme. Each box will contain two named characters that can also be used as Spec Ops models, some form of VIP model and a scenario involving all three models plus your own armies.

We’ve seen concept sketches but no models yet, so let’s get going on those sketches…

Temporal Alliance (or ‘GoT another Missile Launcher?’)

Apart from the obvious not-Danny v. ‘You know nothing, Trasimedes’ vibe, Trasimedes himself needs a bit of explanation. There’s been a long-running but intermittent Infinity comic strip by Alexander Nevsky covering some of the characters in the Infinity universe. A recurring theme of these is the artificial recreation of Achilles being a lech and waving his fair locks at the ladies – usually followed by the world-weary Trasimedes lugging out a missile launcher to shoot Achilles and save the ladies, at least until the next backup body is decanted…

Viral Outbreak (or, ‘All Aliens All the Time’)

Carrying on a theme of having opposed genders from the existing Spec Ops comes this female Tohaa and male Shasvastii set.

The VIP for this set looks likely to be the Hazmat, based on the set name and the tendency for Tohaa to use nasty viral tech.

Rescue in the Train (or, ‘The Rules Examples Come Alive!’)

Bipandra the Fusilier is a staple of the books’ rules examples, always succeeding in her rolls while the hapless Fusilier Angus always fails. Cue the likely VIP for this box, with a perfect gormless grin…

Escape or Die (or, ‘Forum Clash!’)

Panoceania get a third Spec Ops for the Military Orders while Haqqislam get a Hassassin Muyib.
In another great bit of fan acknowledgement, Konstantinos is one of the earliest fans of Infinity and does a lot to promote the game – his post count on the official forum is even higher than mine! While Yasbir has been beta testing Infinity with the CB staff from the earliest days and his Hassassin character has also appeared in Alexander Nevsky’s strips many times.
Kantantinos (PsychoticStorm on the forums) had travelled to Gencon from Greece and looked a bit overwhelmed when the slide was shown!

Black Mist (Ariadna v. Yu Jing)

The Caledonian Sectorial of Arianda and the Japanese Sectorial of Yu Jing get their opposed gender Spec Ops models.

Remaining VIPs

Still to be IDed with a specific set are three more VIP models – an actual VIP, a Comm-Tech and a Naval Officer.

This is a re-written excerpt from my summary of the main Infinity news from Gencon.

So, which set will you buy, and why?
