This Week in 40K Podcasting – 09/20/2013 – 09/26/2013
Highlights: This week is a huge 4+ hour show with the second part of the guy’s review of Codex Space Marines! They opened up the show with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where they discussed the games they have played lately. This included a conversation about the ever changing meta and how it is impossible to build an ‘all-comers’ list. Then, in ‘Tactical Terrain’, Eric is back with his review of the Feast of Blades Qualifier Tournament he recently attended. This included interviews with some of his opponents and how he performed overall. Next, DJ is back with ‘Simhammer’ and this week he takes a closer look at the new Space Marine Grav weapons and their effect on the table. This included a detailed analysis on where the best time to use them is, and on bikes they are awesome! In the Community segment, we heard from Frontline Games, the Guardian Cup, and much more. Next, Dave and Franco from the 40K Global podcast joined the show and they had a nice conversation about the tournament scene in the UK. They hit on the top three army builds going the rounds on the top tables there, the differences between how they practice and their overall tournament scene. Next, the boys are back to looking at the new Space Marine Codex! They started off with a brief re-look at how awesome the Thunderfire Cannon is before moving on to the new Centurions both Assault and Devastator squads, the Dev Squads outshining their brothers. They blow by Landspeeders and moved on to the Stormtalon, Strormraven, the Marine transports like the Rhino and the Drop Pod, and much more. They then stopped off at the new Hunter and Stalker tanks and how well they believe these tanks will perform before touching on the Land Raider. They moved on to Legion of the Damned (who aren’t that bad now) and Sternguard as the best choices out of the Elites. They moved on to the Special Characters, touching on Marneus Calgar, Sicarius, the awesomeness that is Tigurius, Kor’Sarro Khan, Vulkan He’Stan and more!
Opinion: I have to say with all of the ‘Marine’ review shows I have listened to lately, this one was by far the most informative. The boys did a great job picking out what were the best units in the book, how they can be used, and dropping some great ideas for army builds and tactics. I also enjoyed Eric’s review of the Feast of Blades qualifier and Simhammer, which is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine. Just an outstanding show guys, and easily my favorite for the week!
Opinion: There was a lot of great stuff in this week’s show. I really like the Match events, they are just fun to listen to and really give some great tips along the way. Dave’s monologue was quite insightful and very informative, and the joy that is the Skyshield was just fun to hear about. Great show this week guy, check it out!
Highlights: This week, Kenny, Buck and Chumbalaya are back and this week opened up the show with some announcements before moving on to what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby. Next, the boys moved on to their review of Fortifications and their effect on the battlefield. They started off with a look at the Fortification rules and the Building rules, as this effect both and not many people look at these rules in the book. This included the rules for embarking them, shooting them, the emplaced guns, the battlements, barricades, and much more. They boys then moved on to discuss the Fortifications actually found in the 40K rulebook, starting with the Aegis Defense Line, and moving on to the Skyshield Landing Pad, Imperial Bastion, and the Fortress of Redemption. They moved on to the latest addition to the Fortifications and the rules found in the boxes of those models. This included the rules for the Firestorm Redoubt and the Vengeance Weapon Battery.
Opinion: I have to say first that I was really happy to not have to listen to yet another review of the Space Marine codex. I am sure the boys will do one, and I look forward to it, but to have a completely diffent show to listen to was refreshing for me! And, it was on a great topic, rules that I rarely use on the table and often get wrong because of that. I found this to be a great respite from the Marine overlord and I learned a few things along the way. Thanks guys!
Opinion: This was really a different kind of show this week, and I really liked it. It was kind of cool to hear some top tournament players look at lists, break them down, and tweak and improve them. There was a lot of great insight to be found all around in this week’s show.
Highlights: This week the boys have their Space Marine Codex Review! They open up the show with some discussion about their top 5 man movies before moving on to a few announcements. Next, the boys moved on briefly to their’ State of Paint’ segment, where they discussed the progress they have made in their hobby. They then moved on to an article recently posted here on BoLS on terrain placement (here) and how we as 40K players might be doing it wrong. They argued that the terrain should also be part of the story of your game. They then moved on to a very brief look at the Space Marine Codex, and then played an actual game with the new models and rules to see how they perform on the table. They looked at the Chapter Tactics and how they can play the Marines differently, some of the units that stood out to them, the weapons including the Grav Guns, Barrage on the Thunderfire Canon, and much more! Next, the guys tried out the new Space Marines in a live game against the dreaded Chaos Daemons. The boys covered the lists, the mission, the deployment, and a final review of the game and it’s outcome.
Opinion: Unless I’m mistaken, this is the first time the boys have hit the top five, and with good reason, this was a good show this week. Their Marine Coverage was brief enough to rehash what pretty much everyone else has, but they followed it up with some real table experience with the new codex. Very good choice guys, keep up the good work!
