Malifaux Comparison: Old Rasputina Versus New Rasputina

Sooooo much blue paint everywhere. Let’s look at some comparison shots of Rasputina classic and the new hotness (coldness?)

(Classic metal models painted up and borrowed from local player Morella shown on the left)

I’ll admit, I was originally drawn to the new Rasputina box set due to the sculpt of the master herself. I certainly have no problems with the cheesecake style of models, but it was incredibly nice to see a frost witch that looked like she was properly prepared for a trek through a blizzard. Can’t fight very well if all your fleshy bits freeze off. The rest of the box then grew on me while I was painting it, especially that golem.

Rasputina herself is a grand model. Not very many pieces to put together and it’s definitely a bit passive compared to the old one (especially compared to the old alternate sculpt), but it will definitely get the job done. Wyrd managed to avoid their current love of incredibly tiny pieces here, the arms and head are all separate pieces, but nothing crazy outlandish like individual hands.
The ice gamin are absolutely TINY however, and may be a bit tricky to assemble as that leads to some very small connection points between the body and appendages. The icy rock on the base of the icicle spear gamin looks like it was originally meant to be part of the golem, but it fits nowhere and the instructions don’t mention it, so I turned the rock into a free piece of basing.
Compared to the gamin, her Wendigo totem is absolutely insane (in a good way). Where the original metal one (which I don’t have pics of unfortunately) was one small piece, the plastic Wendigo is a 15 piece monstrosity of human eating action. Unfortunately for those who feel that the sculpt it a little too over the top, one of the Wendigo’s feet and a hand are sculpted onto the human, so some extra work would be required to sculpt it to a single piece. I adored the alternate version of Bête Noire, so this human “scenic base” was right up my alley. For something involving one model jumping on another that sits on the rim of the base, it actually has pretty good balance and doesn’t really tip over unless you smack it.
Now here’s the incredible winner of the box. The original ice golem was pretty wimpy looking for a gigantic animated hunk of ice, but between editions he pumped himself UP! Seriously, the old model was a 40 mm base, now it’s on a 50 mm. A lot less passive, a lot bulkier, ready to rip you up and toss away the pieces…even ignoring the base size change, this is definitely the version you want.
I definitely enjoyed this box. Is everyone else enjoying the new plastics?
