Goatboy with a quick review of the new Data Slate/Info/Old White Dwarf/Etc update from GW Digital.  Hello Be’Lakor!

First of all – this type of quick impulse buy rule set is something I don’t hate.  It gives me more rules to play around with and hopefully some new answers to the annoying bits within 40k right now.  I won’t go into what grinds my gears right now in 40k and instead want to go into what I think about this new Chaos Gods Trust Fund Baby – Be’Lakor.

Da Basics
Let’s get some basics out of the way for those who haven’t been paying attention to Daemon blogs. Here is the basic information you get for grabbing this guy.

-He can lead a CSM or Daemon army
-His stats are just like a Daemon Prince with the added bonus of +1 to his leadership
-He has a Sword with a ton of special abilities – Armourbane, Fleshbane, +1 to Strength, Master Crafted
-He is smart in the spells of the Mind – you could say he knows them all
-He has earned his 3rd degree black belt in mind fu
-He lives forever and cares not about your weenie strength 10
-He is all shadowy and like a Nurgle guy is hard to hit in some ruins.
-Oh he is spooky too and gets more power if people get scared.
-He has a good invulnerable save like that Fate guy people like
-He likes to fly first class as well.

His cost fits right into the whole Black Mace CSM guy so he seems correctly costed.  I think his real power lies in that he has access to all of Telepathy, which is extremely useful.  I have won many a game with Terrify, Hallucinate, and Mental Fortitude.  I see this guy fitting into the role that Fateweaver plays – a force multiplier.

Be’Lakor Tips & Tricks
Here are some things I can see this guy being useful.  You are playing a Dog Bomb and you scout your dogs up.  An opponent unloads on the unit, you go to ground and during your turn you cast Mental Fortitude to jump your dogs up, move up and assault.  Terrify is great too as it combos with his extra ability to get more Warp Charges and allows you to remove yourself from tarpits.  We all know how good Invisibility is and Hallucinate can win games on its own.  I am still waiting on the day I can cast Puppet Master on the Tau Sky Ray or a Manticore and just go to town with Templates and Missiles.  Dominate can be surprising as well as Daemons have a lower leadership value and causing them to sit still for a turn can be a big boon.

Right now I am looking at using him in an FMC and Grinder Bomb style list.  I don’t want to do Screamer Star, Dog Bomb, Full FMC, or whatever other idiotic name we all come up with for dumb lists.  I want to use him as a way to help out the troops in an army.  Yes there are 3 flying MC’s but everything else is a bit different and works differently.

CSM Side (Yeah… min ally… hooray! I just wanted Fate as the warlord so I paid the 50 point tax plus I didn’t shoehorn in a dragon cuz noboby likes them.)
HQ: Be’Lakor
Troops: Cultists X 10

The two Exalted gifts are for the Book (good versus other Daemons, good to keep dogs alive, good in general but not mandatory with the list build) and the Portal.  This helps the low amount of troops I have access too as I plan on having the Daemonettes moving forward and engaging.  The two grinders are there to get involved in nonsense as well as give me more Anti Air and other options to punch things.  I have had fun with Grinders lately.  The 10 dogs are a target unit and mixed with the ability to go to ground and pop back up they could be handy.

A better version might up the Daemonettes to 3 squads of 18 by dropping the grinders and adding a Dragon.  But hey I didn’t want a Dragon in this list and thus the build set up.  I am hoping we see Cypher like the hints point at and maybe another evil bad guy to add to the mix.  If only this guy allowed you to take unmarked Daemon Princes in a Daemon army.

The army feels a bit lacking in parts but I want to see how he does with some testing this week and maybe the weekend.  Be’Lakor seems alright on paper I just want to see how he plays.  The biggest thing is he is an extremely small model when you compare him to other Daemon Princes and MC’s.

I got lucky and found one in a random box of stuff I traded for over a year ago.  He was missing his lion clothe/Chain mail thingie so I just made sure to highlight his Ken Doll features.  I painted him up last night while watching TV.  This is the old metal one and lucky for me whoever traded it to me glued him very well.  He was flopping around a box and the only thing missing was the clothe and his sword was a bit bent.  A few words of encouragement and this model was ready to paint.

WOO HOO – I’M BACK!

So what’s your take on Be’Lakor?  Worth it, or meh?
