Time to finish off these Trollbloods. Let’s get Boomhowler onto the painting table!

I left off last time with the tartan painted red. We’re going to paint some white bands on that tartan now with Menoth White Base. Any kind of freehanding on an uneven surface like this cloth requires an extra steady hand. You have to really try to move your brush up and down with the contours. If your brush encounters a ridge the extra pressure exerted on it may cause extra paint to be forced out, creating blobs.

I add a second lattice of thinner lines with Underbelly Blue.

Finally, I add a little square of Cygnar Blue Highlight at the intersections of the Menoth White lines.

Then I add some instant shading to the tartan with some good old Agrax Earth.  For more about painting tartans you can check out this article and this article.

Next I move onto the back of Mr. Boomhowler’s pants. These get a basecoat of Hammerfall Khaki.

The Hammerfall is shaded with Gun Corps Brown. In the darkest recesses I add some of my favorite Umbral Umber/Beaten Purple mix to add even more contrast. And you need that contrast to make sure Boomhowler’s buttocks are nice and defined.

Next I begin work on the various brown areas of the mini. You may have notice I laid a lot of them down a few steps back, but I decided to move onto the tartan and leave the browns for later. After laying down that initial coat of Umbral Umber on all sorts of different areas, I turn my attention to the axe haft. I paint on some wood grain with thin lines of Gun Corps Brown followed by more lines of Hammerfall Khaki. Then it all gets a wash of Agrax Earth. The same technique is also used on the stocks of all the blunderbusses.

For the boots and various other leather straps on the model, I start with Bloodstone as a highlight.

I add just a little bit of Rucksack Tan to the Bloodstone for just a bit more highlighting to make it pop even more. Then I carefully add a mix of Exile Blue and Umbral Umber to the recesses to create even more definition.

There are a few more straps that require a different color. Bloodstone just doesn’t create enough contrast against the bronze armor, so I paint these straps, as well as the ones on the Axe Haft, with Coal Black.

Additionally, I highlight the pants with Gun Corps Brown.

The Coal Black straps are Highlighted with Trollblood Base and shaded with a mix of Thamar and Bloodstone. I always tone my blacks with a bit of color to create a bit of extra richness. I also go back over a bunch of metal parts that were inadvertently painted over, redefining them with Radiant Platinum.

Next I wash all those metal parts with my custom metal wash from last article. I also go over those blue straps with the wash to even them out a bit. At this point the only things left are on Boomhowler’s backside.

All of these Trollkin are covered in little bags and pouches. I paint all of these with Trollblood Highlight.

These are washed with Agrax Earth, then touched up with Trollblood Highlight again for some added definition.

~ And now I have Boomhowler’s to play with. I’ll be back next with some more Trollkin.
