HOBBY: Warmachine: Painting Bane Thralls Pt. 1
Today we’ll be painting something absolutely dreadful. Get out your paint brushes and follow along.
We’re going to start this rusty armor off with a coat of Bloodstone. This is a Formula P3 color like all the ones I’ll be using.
The Bloodstone is drybrushed with Radiant Platinum. Then all the areas I plan to paint gold get a basecoat of Traitor Green.
This is drybrushed with Solid Gold.
Then I go over everything with some Armor Wash.
All the open areas of the armor now get a coat of Bastion Gray.
I begin to add some highlights with Trollblood base. I add it kind of haphazardly at first, trying to get a feel for where I want the highlights.
Then I go back with some more of the same color, but this time I blend it into its surroundings while its still wet.
I add a little Cryx Bane Base in a few places to darken it up further.
Then I add just a few final highlights with Thrall Flesh. Yes I’m using the Thrall Flesh on the armor and not on the actual thrall flesh. Then it’s time for one of those really annoying steps. I use Thamar Black toned with a generous amount of Ordic Olive to line all the areas where the grays and golds meet.
All the studs need to be lined as well. Then the gold is cleaned up.
I start adding a bit of weathering by stippling on some Thrall Flesh in a few places.
Then I go back over those stipples of Thrall Flesh with Umbral Umber. If you leave a line of the Thrall Flesh beneath the Umbral Umber you can create the illusion of light reflecting off chipped paint.
Then a wash of thinned down Bloodstone is added around these areas to create the appearance of rust bleeding out from beneath the paint.
~ Make sure to check back. I’ll be finishing this guy up soon.
