40K: Time for the Big Dance!
Well ladies and gents, the biggest show in town is once again upon us! Adepticon!
Reecius here from Frontline Gaming to talk about the event that continues to inspire us, excite us and set the bar for excellence in organized tabletop gaming tournaments and hobby events!
Adepticon is a fantastic event. If you have not gone, you should, at least once. It is a celebration of the hobby we all love and a chance to hang out with like minded individuals for 4 days of fun and games. There’s something there for the competitive players, hobbyists, and social gamers alike! If you like the fluff, learning new painting techniques, demoing new games, or competition against some of the best players in the world, Adpeticon has something to offer you.
Most of all though, it is the camaraderie that I enjoy the most. You see friends you only see a few times a year at Adepticon to share war stories form past events, make new memories with and have a great weekend.
As for the actual 40K Championship itself, the event we here at Frontline tend to be most focused on as a team, I unfortunately foresee a lot of Deathstars. Perhaps even worse than two years ago when we had 26% of the field Grey Knights. 6th edition is a cool, fun, open edition but unfortunately has some of the worst rules abuses we’ve ever seen in this game. There have always been some crazy, lame rules combos in this game but I think we may have reached a new high.
With the ability to combine rules from different books into stacked combos that do things probably never intended, I think players making the trip out will give in to the temptation to play these armies to increase their odds of winning. It is understandable in a competitive event to bring the biggest stick you can find. However, in the arms race we tend to lose sight of what makes the game fun. Eventually it may end up hurting the game.
I will be very curious to see how folks react to the results of this event. I wonder if we will finally hit that point where we realize that while competition is fun, and for some, the more intense the better, have we entered a place where it finally has gone a bit too far? GW doesn’t seem interested in fixing the issues with their dearth of FAQs. Maybe the rumored 7th ed will fix some of this stuff, but who knows? Perhaps after this inbound lesson we will see the need for some self-restraint in order to have more enjoyable events for everyone. Perhaps not. I would just prefer to not wait until people start to say screw it, I am over this, before changing course. Maybe with formations and Knights we will see the Deathstars crack a bit? We think that these will help but they won’t be at Adepticon this year.
My predictions for Adepticon are these:
- Eldar will probably be the most prevalent army, featuring Seer Councils galore. I am going to laugh when we have the epic slap fights that will be the inevitable Seer Council vs. Seer Council battles. That will be hilarious.
- Space Marines with Centurion Stars and Bike Armies will be right there, maybe even slightly more popular than Eldar.
- Beaststars will be probable next in line.
- Daemons will be next most prevalent, IMO, with the occasional Sorcerer/Cultists/Dranke add on.
- Tau will still be popular and I expect to see a lot of them including the ever popular Taudar, IronTau and Oh’vessastar.
- Lastly, I predict that we will see a metric ton of Inquisitors. Mostly Coteaz, but also generic Inquisitors. I chuckle to myself to think how many Coteaz on Coteaz match-ups will happen!
