This Week in 40K Podcasting – 08/08/2014 – 08/14/2014
The 11th Company – Episode 204
Highlights: This week the guys check in with an almost 3.5 hour show, so strap in for some 40K awesomeness! They kicked off the show with what games they have been playing lately, which included the most recent Space Wolf releases like the Murderfang, and the GW finical report. Alan then went on to discuss his games at the Bay Area Open! Next, in ‘Tactical Terrain’ Eric discussed what seminars he will be running at this year’s NOVA Open and what you can learn about display boards! Next, Neil led a discussion on the 7th Edition meta and where it is going early on in the edition. They discussed the Bay Area Open results and how many Space Marine armies were near the top, and how they feel that will translate to the East Coast who is not playing with Lords of War. They discussed what the competitive scene currently looks like with Knights, tier 1 armies like summoning Daemons, Centurion-star and blob Guard armies, and tier two armies like Necrons AV 13 spam, MSU Space Marines, MSU Tau, Serpent Spam and much more! Neil then took the time to discuss the menace of the Imperial Knights and how you need to build lists prepared for them. Next, Mark steps into Pat’s shoes as the interview guy and interviews Kurt from Team Quality Control and they discussed the ETC and how they won it all this year! They closed out the show by responding to questions from their Facebook fans!
Opinion: Well, there was an awful lot to digest in this mega-episode! First, Alan’s coverage of the BOA was one of my favorite things about the show. Hearing first-hand how the event went down was very entertaining. The big one for me this week was the discussion on the meta and where 7th Edition is going competitively. Overall, a great show, very thought provoking! Thanks guys!
Opinion: I absolutely love the guys’ coverage of new Codices when they release and this one was no exception. Top to bottom, a very complete look at the new-look Space Wolves and what you will be seeing on the table very shortly. I am a huge fan of their unit-by-unit format and pointing out things I know I missed on my read through. I absolutely recommend this as one of your first stops when looking for Space Wolf goodness this week! Very good show guys!
Opinion: Lange and Matty did a really good job breaking down the Space Wolf Codex this week, and pointing out all of the ‘interesting’ design choices the GW staff made with this release. I especially liked their ‘Model of the Wekk’ segment this week, as we all were thinking it about the Space Sleigh model, and these guys nailed it. Keep up the good work!
Highlights: Matt and Sean are back after a bit of a break and they kicked off the show with what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby. This included a tournament that Sean played in run by Kenny from the Heroic 28s podcast. Next, in the main segment of the show, the guys dove into an article written by Adam B from the blog “The Dice Abide” entitled ‘An Awkward Situation from this Weekend…‘ and this involved allegations of cheating at the Bay Area Open. This article was featured here, on BoLS as well as other 40K ‘media’ outlets. They talked how it was written that there was a mistake made during a game, and it was not caught during the game. It wasn’t until after that it was noticed, and hence, way too late to do anything about it. This moved on to a discussion on how both players are responsible for knowing the rules to the game. Next, the guys tackled the lasted from the GW Finical Reports and the stepping down of Tom Kirby, well sort of. They both agree that Tom Kirby clearly is out of touch with the real world and what it takes to run a successful company. They did take the time to mention some of the thing that GW is doing right, like digital resources and the potential for 3D printing and options GW has in this field. They closed out the show with a discussion on the right size of 40K games now in 7th Edition. They talked about how they are seeing more and more at 1500 and why they believe this is so.
Opinion: So this show has really taken a turn in my eyes over the last few episodes, and slowly but surely they keep creeping up my list of quality 40K podcast! They really had two very intriguing topics this week, the cheating at a GT being my personal favorite, and kept the show on the rails for a great finish. I am not sure what changed over there guys, but I have to say I really like the new format. Very good show this week!
Highlights: This week the guys kick off the show with an interview with Doc Dragon and they discussed this year’s CelestiCon! Doc discusses all of the events that will go down there and who will be running them, however there is a sever lack of X-Wing there! They, of course, hit Doc Dragon with the LAtCS ‘Dirty Dozen’ questions to follow up the interview! Next, Longhair is back and the boys dove into their Stormclaw Brakdown! In the vein of their old Battleforce Breakdowns, they run down each army in the set and point out the value of this box set for those armies, low and high ends. They also look at the missions that were included in this set and how this introduced players to the game. They then rated this box set based on its overall value.
Opinion: Don’t look now, but the LAtCS guys are back in my top 5! I really liked hearing from Doc Dragon and all the events at CelestiCon this year, however my favorite segment this week was the Battleforce, I mean Stormclaw breakdown. Still the only show where you can find this kind of break down on the value of what you are getting in the box! Love the show guys!
