This Week in 40K Podcasting – 10/31/2014 – 11/06/2014
The Overlords – Episode 163 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the boys kicked off the show by announcing that this is indeed no new codex this week from the fire hose of content we have had from GW as of late. They started off with the ‘News’ where they discussed the new Tyranid models starting to see circulation on the net, with rules and no new codex, and included new video games, Forgeworld, FAT Mats and much more! Next, it was on to what the guys have been doing lately in the hobby and gaming. Next it was on to the main topic of the show, which this week was all about the ‘Maelstrom’ mission cards! They discussed how these cards drastically change how the game is played and how individual armies react to them. They also discussed some tactics for placing objectives correctly and how you will keep and hold those objectives. In the next segment, the guys discussed those epic narrative moments in a game where you almost disregard the tactical thing to do in a game and go with what is more interesting to the story of the game. They all shared movement in non-competitive games where they choose to do the ‘cool’ thing as opposed to the tactical correct thing. They closed out the show with a quick review of the new Ork Codex. Adam from the Masters of the Forge podcast joined the cast to cover his favorite army! In typical Overlords fashion, they covered the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of this book.
Opinion: As always the guys turn in with a pretty excellent show! My favorite segment however was the ‘epic movement in gaming’ where their discussed all of the cool thing they have done over the years. I, myself, have also had those moments where you throw tactics out the window to do the ‘cool’ thing. The Ork Codex review was also quiet good as well. Overall, my top pick for the week!
Forge the Narrative – Episode 71
Highlights: This week the guys address ‘Starting a 40K Community’! They open up the show with what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby, which included some zombie apocalypse survival and the upcoming competitive season. The boys also talked about some of the top lists you will see mostly in this competitive season, from Wave Serpent spam to Imperial Knights. They then moved into the main topic for the show, which were some ideas on how to build a community and a tournament community at that. This including finding people to help the community and ideas on running Organized Play groups in your area. They discussed monthly events and pyramid tournaments to help build interest and support for the community. Then the guys talked a bit about the new Fantasy End Times and how this could do amazing things if done in 40K! They also talked about the new Tyranid models with some rather lack luster rules. They did their best to cover them, but also offered up some ideas on how these rules should have been.
Highlights: This week the guys kicked off the show with what they have been doing lately in the hobby and gaming. This included a ‘Geek Nations Tour’ review and some real life mechanics of Warmachine warjacks. Then it was on to the news and all of the new hotness out from Forgeworld, the new Tyranid models, and more. In the second segment the gang led into a Terrain Building segment where they discussed building terrain for many game systems including 40K, Wild West Exodus, Warmachine, and much more. Next, on ‘Girls on Gaming’ Jen reviewed the PoweredPlay powered bases and how amazing they are! They discussed their latest Kickstarter, all of the cool stuff these new powered bases offer and some of the great stretch goals. Next, the gang had a great hobby discussion about ‘Wet-on-Wet’ blending of paint color to create gradation between the two colors. They then had an interview with Chris from Powered Play and talked about all of those amazing new lighted bases!
Opinion: So this week’s so was very hobby centered with tips all over the board here Everything from terrain building to cool lighting kits to Wet on Wet paint blending! I was really impress to say the truth. While it felt like there wasn’t a lot of 40K content here, that is not the case at all. There were LOADS of great hobby ideas in this episode. I’m a big fan of that! Great work gang!
The Wolfkin Podcast – Episode 31 ***Explicit***
Highlights: This week the boys are joined by Chuck and they kicked off the show with what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby. This included a recent tournament! The guys then move on to discuss the next event they will be participating in, which will be their first attempt at a Highlander event. They discuss what Highland reverts are like, the rules, and what lists they are thinking of taking. They then moved on to talk about their recent league and some things that they could have changed to make it work better, and some of their favorite oddball pre-game rituals! They finished off the show with questions from their Facebook fans.
Opinion: First of all, sorry to make your buddy cry guys, this real life job thing is getting crazy! Secondly, one heck of an episode guys! I did find myself wishing the guys had gone a bit more into detail on the Highlander thoughts and some of the games from their league, both segments had some cool 40K goodness in there. And the topic of odd ball 40K behaviors was just classic! Very nice work boys!
40K Radio – Episode 79 ***Explicit
Highlights: Well, the boys took a month off and are now two months behind on new releases. So they kicked off the show with what has been happening over the last two months, including the new End Times Fantasy releases. They then briefly covered the new Dark Eldar Codex, the new model range, and the lack of a Lord of War. Then it was on to the End Times stuff, so you can skip that. Next it was on to the latest from Forgeworld and Imperial Armour 13! After a break it was a return of the ‘Rapid Fire’ segment, where they answer odd questions from their forum fans. This included a contest for those forum fans. Then, in the ‘Crosshairs’, Rik reviewed some of the 30K Heavy Support choices and some of their rules.
Opinion: Well they are back and played a little catch up after being off for two months. This episode was a little lukewarm to me, we some cool content that they didn’t really have a lot of time to go over much. I really would had liked to have heard more Dark Eldar review and less Rapid Fire. The Crosshairs sort of made up for it, but that too felt like it was missing something. A good episode, but we have had better from the guys!
