Wargame Podcast Review: Introduction
Hello, I’m Bahkara and I will be reviewing wargaming podcasts each week for YOU! But first an introduction is in order.
I have been wargaming for about 30 years. I play a number of different game systems but my main focus is Warhammer 40,000. Some of these other systems include, Warhammer Fantasy, Warmahordes, Malifaux, SAGA, Hail Caesar, Black Powder, Bolt Action, and De Bellis Antiquitatis to name but a few.
I listen to a number of podcasts about a number of different subjects. A majority of these, however, are wargame related. Since this is more of an introduction than an actual review, I will list some of the podcasts that I regularly listen to, in no particular order.
I play in tournaments a lot, just recently having attended the Las Vegas Open. Although I do not consider myself highly competitive I enjoy listening to these podcasts for the tournament talk.
11th company – Nice ensemble with people from across the country. They mainly look at the competitive side of 40K. The Q&A at the end is my favorite.
Allies of Convenience – Episodes usually run almost 5 hours. Some sound quality issues but if you want tournament reports from around the world this is the podcast to listen to.
Forge the Narrative – Good cast of characters that mix the competitive talk with some humor.
Imperial Vox Cast – A solid podcast that, although not as intense as the others, still provides a lot of the information you will need when going to tournaments.
This next group of podcasts focus more on general gaming or the more “narrative” part of the game.
The Independent Characters – The current big dog. I am sad to hear about the end of the podcast. Carl and company produce a quality product.
Adeptus Terra – A new podcast that I enjoy. The hosts discuss all aspects of the hobby.
Veterans of the Long War – A monthly podcast that looks at the happenings in there are, North Eastern U.S., and the hobby in general.
The Overlords – Podcast based in the UK. Nice cast with good content about the hobby and running narrative events, such as the Battle for Haven.
Masters of the Forge – Whether its Battlefleet Gothic using the Star Wars mechanics or custom Space Wolf missions based on the book “Battle of the Fang” the hosts always have something to spice up your narrative gaming.
I call these next two “Corporate podcasts” because they are owned and run by businesses.
Signals from the Frontline – Run by Frontline Gaming, the guys that brought us the Las Vegas Open, they give general information about 40K and other game systems
40K Radio – Run by Battlefoam, this podcast also talks about 40K in general as well as other game systems
Last but certainly not least…
Life after the Cover Save – The only comedy 40K podcast, that I know of. I even enjoy the “Reece from the future” commercials. From what I can tell it’s 90% comedy and 10% 40K.
With the recent upsurge in people’s interest in 30K a couple podcasts have turned up.
The Imperial Truth – A podcast that talks about all things 30K. From how to get started to the goings on at the latest Horus Heresy Weekender. This podcast is a valuable resource if you want to play in the Age of Darkness.
After Ullanor – The Horus Heresy book club. A must if you want to know about the Horus Heresy. The hosts do such a good job going over the books that you feel like you don’t even need the books(Don’t tell Black Library)
No, fantasy isn’t dead(yet). Here are a couple of podcasts that I enjoy.
Garagehammer – This podcast talks about the Warhammer Fantasy Masters and the hobby in general. They have done a really good job going over the endtimes book and I always look forward to the next one.
West Coast Hammertime –The focus is mainly on tournaments as they also run the West Coast GT.
And the rest!
The following are other tabletop wargaming podcast that I follow.
WWPD Network – WWPD (What Would Patton Do) is a network of podcasts that cover Flames of War and Bolt action among other games. Be warned that if you subscribe for WWPD you will get all the podcasts so be sure your data plan is up to it when you first sign up.
Meeples & Miniatures – Although they do cover some non-tabletop games they do talk about other miniature game systems for those that want to quit GW games or re looking for some alternative.
Rolling Hot – A new podcast, and only one, for Dropzone Commander.
Chain Attack – A Warmachine competitive podcast. Subjects typically range from battle reports to list and game analysis.
Hand Cannon Online – A network of podcasts focusing on Warmachine. The same warning for the WWPD Network goes for this one too.
The X-Wing Podcast – The hosts are new to the game so it’s a good show if you are just starting out.
The Nova Squadron – Excellent X-Wing Podcast that talks about the competitive side of the game.
Well I think that’s enough for now. I hope you like the list. This is not even the complete list of podcasts that I listen to. I do have my own podcast, TFG Radio, where we talk about 40K and other games, so give it a listen and let me know what you think.
What do you think of the list? Did I miss anything? If there is a podcast that you think I should give a try? I’m always open to new podcasts so just let me know!
