40K: ClassicHammer On The Table
We got to play in a ClassicHammer Tourney – here’s how it turned out!
Hello BoLS Readers! So I recently got to play in a tournament which used the ClassicHammer Format*. I’m here to report that the world didn’t end and everyone had a pretty good time. From a players perspective here is what I noticed:
Army building was a breeze
With the lack of formations/allies and extra special rules I didn’t have to play that part of the “meta” game. It took a lot less work to create a Tyranid List to try and counter every silly thing I could think of – maybe it’s just how I prep for a tourney but I like to be over prepared. Not having to worry really took the pressure off!
The lack of allies/formations cause a lot less rules questions
Overall there were a lot less rules questions or calls of “Judge” during the day. That was a great change. Most people finished their games with no problems too.
Players that don’t typically show up for tournaments showed up
I think the format is a lot less intimidating for players in general. Players who might not feel comfortable playing in an “standard” tournament may see this as a much softer format to play in. And also the previous two reasons above.
People played with things they wouldn’t normally take
Was this because they didn’t have the need to worry about countering the latest formation/cheese? Maybe. Perhaps they just felt like giving something new a shot. I even took somethings in my ‘Nid list I never get to take. That’s not to say there weren’t tough lists out there – It was just refreshing for a lot of players to try units that had been gathering dust or unused units in general. I saw a Harlequin army vs a Chaos Khorne list with a Lord of Skulls. I faced Ad Mech with Close-Combat units. #mindblown
Everyone had fun
Maybe it was just because it was a pretty chill group of 20 or so players. Maybe it was because it was only 1500 points. Perhaps it was just because it was on a sleepy Sunday and people were in a good mood. Or Maybe the format promotes playing the game for fun and not list building shenanigans…It’s tough to say. But everyone had a good time and at the end of the day. That’s really all I cared about.
I got to scream “Nom-Nom-Nom!” as my battlecry all day!
The format may not be for everyone – that’s okay. If you enjoy 7th right now with all the formations, allies, endless possibilities then that’s GREAT! More power to you. But if you ever feel like it’s just too much to handle and you need a break but still want to tickle your 40k itch give ClassicHammer a try. Hey, you just might like it.

*We used the ITC FAQ for any rules questions and while it was a tournament prize support was randomized. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best Painted and Best Sportsmen did receive metals as well. Knights were also allowed with TO permission. Harlequins were allowed to nominate a character as their HQ choice. One Lord of War was allowed.
