GEEKERY: We’re Getting a Star Wars Buddy Movie!
New details about Han’s solo movie have been released… and they involve the big, hairy guy!
There has been an assumption that the Han Solo project would have his friendship with Chewie at its center. The movie focuses on how Han became the smuggler, scoundrel, and thief that Luke and Obi-Wan met at the cantina at Mos Eisley… how can you not have the big hairy guy?
Disney CEO Bob Iger – who has been confirming bits and pieces of the new Star Wars movies at various meetings recently – said this at a conference yesterday:
“‘We have others [movies] in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy. And that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there’ll be possibly be more thereafter.”
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller of The Lego Movie are set to direct. The pair have a hefty burden to carry, and have assured fans that they – fans themselves – are the right guys for the job.
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
There isn’t casting news, yet. I think casting Han is going to be the most difficult part of this project – he’s such an iconic character. If they don’t get that casting right the movie will flop. Logan Lerman, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Emory Coen, Dave Franco, and Scott Eastwood (yes, that Eastwood) have all been name dropped. They’re in pre-production – expecting a name will be released fairly soon.
Who is your Han?
