Geekery: BvS – Why Can’t DC Make a Good Movie?
It looks like DC has another very expensive critical flop on its hands…
They’ve done the rounds of promotional videos, late night talk shows, and product placements in order to drum up some excitement. The movie that has generally been panned by fans starting with casting announcements, and amplified after the plot spoilers shown in December’s trailer. The movie was released yesterday and the reviews aren’t glowing.
“[It] does have some shining moments, but they are too few and far between in an effort that is overflowing with illogicalities, gaping plot holes and moments that simply don’t make sense in any fundamental way that relates to the characters.” – Andrew Pollard
“A ponderous, smothering, over-pixelated zeppelin crash of a movie scored by a choir that sounds like it’s being drowned in lava.” – Chris Klimek
“It’s not terrible, but it is terribly long, terribly convoluted and terribly bombastic, with a score that would make Richard Wagner ask if they could please turn it down.” – Chris Knight
“The movie is Bat-sh*t crazy. A dour, disdain-filled demeanor, plus a gluttony of complex plot twists, dissipates most of the contact high.” – Matt Patches
Ouch… that’s a lower rating than Tommy Wiseau’s The Room with a $244,000,000 difference in budget. The outlook on returns isn’t all that great – from a pessimistic opening around $157 million to an optimistic $185 million. There have been reports of kids having to be ushered out in the first 15 minutes because it’s too much. It’s fine to make a superhero movie for an older audience, but it’s got to be a good one to rake in the returns. We will have to see how all of this pans out over the next 72 hours, but the estimates don’t look good. This puts all of DC’s upcoming films on very unsteady ground, and there are a lot of them.
Swayed by the bad reviews and spoiler filled promotional plan? Might I suggest an alternative that includes action, super powers, and the dude that plays General Zod…
Or you can watch the Unipiper and Friends 177 times to fill the 2.5 hours it would take to watch Batman v Superman…
So… are you spending your money on Batman v Superman this weekend?
