Initial Thoughts
I love the miniatures! Love them. The 6 heroes are very different in theme and posing, each fitting to their background. The Chieftain and the Stormcast are firmly planted in the ground befitting their combat focus, while the spellcasters have more motion and exotic posing and drapery. The villains are not just old GW minis being reused like we saw with Execution Force, but all new minis UPDATE: even the Gaunt Summoner mini is new! When I see these minis I want to know more about the inner workings of Tzeentch’s realm and where these creatures fit into it. Just the kind of expanding of the GW universe in unseen direction I missed from GW. More of that please Nottingham.
Gameplay wise, this seems to be a straightforward dungeon crawl with hero advancement and an escalating tree of difficulty as the players reach thier ultimate goal. It has good promise and is probably leaning towards the simpler sides of things – which fitting for an introductory game of this type and theme.
My only misgiving is the price. At $150, this is right on par with the recent GW boxed game offering such as Betrayal at Calth and Deathwatch Overkill. But let’s not kid ourselves – a LARGE part of the selling point for those products was the obvious opportunities to collect and add amazing 40K minis to existing 40K/30K collections. With no such obvious tie-in for Silver Tower, that $150 is a much harder sell. Aside from the hardcore GW fans, this game could be compared to obvious competitors as:
Imperial Assault (FFG) $99.95
or
Dungeon Saga (Mantic) $79.99
With these competing products you are again put into the assemble and paint GW hobby vs one-piece ready to go models in the box. Things like Imperial Assault come with some very high quality boards, and gameplay options, as well at the top shelf Star Wars license. Mantic certainly has a low price point on thier side and that does matter to a whole lot of customers.
