Tabletop Spotlight: Cataphractii Terminators
The Tabletop Spotlight is on the Horus Heresy Cataphractii Terminators!
The Horus Heresy is back in black with new boxed sets and as a new product line from Games Workshop. Our Friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy brought over the one of the boxes so we could take a look inside:
As far as the models go – they are great. These terminators have all the basics covered. They come with enough bits to supply 5 sets of lightning claws, twin-linked bolters/power fists, 5 chain fists, a heavy flamer and the power sword/auxiliary grenade launcher too. The kits are packed on the sprue and the mould-lines are pretty much non-existent. They are fully plastic so a sharp hobby knife, some clippers and some good plastic glue will work wonders for assembly.
We’ve seem these sculpts before with the Betrayal at Calth box. We’ve even covered the issues about the pricing as well. So I’m not going to beat a dead horse.
However, this new Horus Heresy line is kind of a big deal. While these miniatures aren’t brand new sculpts they are a gateway into this new line for Games Workshop. The Horus Heresy series is super popular and it’s not going anywhere. With the success of Betrayal at Calth it’s no wonder Games Workshop is trying to capitalize on that more by releasing these individual boxes.
I’m optimistic that these boxes are just the first wave from Games Workshop. I know you can order a lot of things from Forge World for the Heresy already but, if Games Workshop really wants to take it to the next level, they are going to have to shift some of those Forge World kits over to plastic and sell them via their retail partners.
I still think if you wanted to get started with a new Horus Heresy army then you should pick-up the Calth Box to start. If you wanted to fill out your forces with just a few more guys or one more dreadnought, I’d buy a box. But you’ll have to way that value vs just buying another Calth box.
Cataphractii Terminators $65
A heavier variant of the Tactical Dreadnought Armour, Cataphractii armour is a relic from the Great Crusade, able to weather almost any form of attack. The price for this resilience is a lack of mobility; and it is for this reason that many Chapters eventually replaced it. Even so, many examples of this ancient armour reside in the armouries of the Adeptus Astartes, ready to be called upon in times of need.
This multi-part plastic kit contains the components necessary to assemble five Cataphractii Terminators, with a huge array of weapon options; combi bolters, power fists, lightning claws, heavy flamers and chain fists are available. Supplied with a transfer sheet and five Citadel 40mm Round bases.
Rules for using Cataphractii Terminators in games of Warhammer 40,000 can be found in Angels of Death.
