Join us we take a look inside the new MK III Trollbloods & Skorne Battlegroup Starter Boxes!

If you were looking for the perfect boxes to jump into Warmachine and Hordes Mk III then Privateer Press has a deal for you! The new Battlegroup Starter Boxes are one of the best “getting started” products I’ve ever seen:

I’m sure most of you probably read that last sentence and thought “oh that’s just typical hyperbole and hype for a new product.” Well, let me be perfectly clear – it’s not hyperbole. These Battlegroup starter boxes are literally everything you need to start playing the game. You don’t even need a friend with this box. Aside from having a fully functional battlegroup to get you started with your chosen faction, you also get all the extras. And when I say all the extras, I mean ALL the extras. Dice, tokens, a measuring device, terrain, a play-mat, a mini-rule book, a faction intro guide & a basic training guide that walks you though EVERYTHING you’ll need to play.

Privateer really out did it with these boxes. Aside from all that awesomeness, the faction intro guides also include recommended things to add – and these aren’t you typical “add this terrible unit that no one actually uses” suggestions. These are “legit lists” that show how you can use the models in the box to fill out to a pair of 75 point lists. The faction intro guide also has some great painting guides to get you started. If you’re a new to the hobby these guys are comprehensive enough that you can learn from, but simple enough that anyone can follow. They are really well done.

If you’re entirely new to Warmachine/Hordes then the basic training guide is you’re new best friend. Inside you’ll find 11 missions designed to teach you everything you’ll need to know how to play the game. Some of these missions are simple – “how to move, how to shoot, what is Fury” – but by the time you’re playing mission 11 you’re actually going to be fighting a ‘Caster duel! Yes, the box even has some cut-outs for the opposition that you can play against. Like I said, everything you need to play is in the box!

The miniatures are colored plastic also. It’s not the same “Grey-Goo” plastics that Privateer used in previous editions. This stuff is hard plastic that you can actually cut with a hobby knife. I have heard a horror story or two about the “PVC” stuff that was used before and apparently so did Privateer Press. They heard you and the new stuff is much, much better! I also like the fact that the plastic was actually colored by faction. I know how everyone likes to see that bare grey plastic and metal on the battlefield…at least it will be easy to tell who’s-who just based on the faction color.

Overall, I think all these starters are fantastic! They are the perfect intro for new players and even old vets will be happy to get one. You get that mini-rulebook as well as a brand new ‘Caster as well as some new Warbeast models to help you fill out your collection. If you had friend that was interested in playing but wasn’t sure about it these are going to be the gift that keeps on giving. If you’re a store looking for some sweet new league-play options, start running a Battlegroup league – you won’t be disappointed. They are out and in stores now – so go check them out!
