It’s been a rollercoaster for Peaks fans – but we finally have something official from Showtime.

The last episode in the second season of Twin Peaks aired on June 10, 1991. The 30 episode run changed television forever – it paved the way for shows like the X-Files, The Sopranos, Lost, Hannibal, and True Detective. It gave the medium permission to be cinematic and weird. Its style of story telling reshaped the police procedural, and redefined how serialization works.

It didn’t just affect television. Over the years it has inspired tributes on Psych, The Simpsons, and Sesame Street. The writers on Fringe hinted that there was an overlap between the two universes. Multiple bands have covered the show’s original music, and written new pieces inspired by it. Oh, and Alan Wake. It’s beloved by fans – there’s an annual festival in Snoqualmie. Some of us even have tattoos (link not NSFW)…

The new series was announced in October of 2014. It was shelved in 2015 due to failed contract negotiations between Mark Frost, David Lynch, and Showtime; and was reinstated a few months later. It was supposed to be out for the 25th anniversary, but didn’t make it. Filming wrapped this April, and Lynch was deep into the editing process in August. The new series was shot from a long script – so not sure on the number of episodes till Lynch finishes cutting it. We still don’t have an exact release date (Showtime says Q2 next year)…

… but we have the first official teaser, and it’s a great something to have.

The Golden Globe® and Peabody Award-winning TWIN PEAKS returns as a new limited series. Considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential broadcast series of all time, TWIN PEAKS followed the residents of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned when homecoming queen Laura Palmer was murdered. Twenty-five years later, the story continues… Expect many familiar faces, including Kyle MacLachlan, reprising his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper. TWIN PEAKS is written by series creators David Lynch & Mark Frost, and directed entirely by David Lynch.
