Hello BoLS readers! Today we are going to paint up an shipyard diorama to show off one lucky army.

Time for part two in making the shipyard backdrop from the recent Tau army photography.  Last time I had finished the assembly of the buildings, so it’s time to get to work on painting those and getting the base ready!

The floor is ready to go. Wood frame and foam floor.  Since this doesnt require intricate cutting in the foam, high density was used.  Two layers with lots of Power Grab and screws makes for a solid but light base.  I have so many backdrops now that they need to hang on the wall, which is the reason for the wood frame, bonus being long term durability.

Thirty something shipping crates from Ironheart Artisans.  These play a minor role in the Tau army photography but will be very useful in future sets such as Infinity that require more fun filler in the photos.

Buildings painted and ready for stencils.  I needed to paint the buildings first because they will be sunk into a “concrete” pad so the whole thing can hang on the wall.  The paint is many steps of back and forth shading and highlighting with masking for the siding, and once the stencils are on lots of weathering in the same fashion to blend them in.

Alex of Ironheart was kind enough to design all the stencils using either exact or fitting typefaces from the movies these are referencing.  His stencils fit perfectly and worked great.  After those were applied lots of weathering and shading was added to make the solid color blend in with the siding.

With the outside of the buildings finished it was time for the inside.  Went for a theme appropriate scheme and something that would contrast, lots of weathering and rust to make it appear old and used. The doors were painted in a cream color, weathered and attached.

See you next time for installing the buildings and getting the floor painted!
