GMM SHOWCASE: Wrapping Up a Grimdark City
Hello BoLS readers! Today we wrap up a grimdark cityscape display diorama.
In my recent articles on the Clan Lachesis army commission (link? Too thumbs to do it when theyre just drafts:( ) there was some custom themed terrain made for photography. In this short series I will go over the construction and thought process behind the scenes.
Making and painting armies is my life and love, and to me making great sets for them to come alive in is part of the fun. For me it all goes back to when I was a kid, the playsets were just as much a part of it as the figures themselves. The armies I paint are not just acrylic applied to plastic and resin but bringing out a customers dream image into reality, and the terrain is celebration of that and adding to the surprise when final photos are taken. So let’s get started and look back at how I made this one!
After a few steps of primer and preliminary color, the statue was brought in for painting. Quite heavy!
The main colors were blocked in over the primer, and with each step on one half, weathering the other while it dried. Lots of back and forth with traditional hand shading, airbrush, and drybrushing.
The end result!
A few huge buildings designed and sent from Ironheart Artisans to help fill in the back behind the statue. They fit perfectly and easy to put together.
Playing around while setting up the terrain.
“Why did the chicken cross the road? Because the Emperor willed it you heretic!”
The final result of terrain and army coming together. Very rewarding when such a big project comes together and I get to see it all fall into place. The hard work paid off!
Thanks for following along, and see you next time for more armies and terrain.
