Those lovable sellouts from EXALT are making their board game debut in the XCOM: Evolution Expansion.

XCOM fans, Fantasy Flight Games is bringing the villain group from XCOM: Enemies Within PC Expansion to the board game version – EXALT is here to make your XCOM Agent’s lives miserable.

Who the Heck are these guys? Well, EXALT is another organization that’s looking to halt your progress at every turn. They are Humans with the funds, tech and connections to cause more than just some “minor” annoyances. If you’ve played the PC game you know what I’m talking about – if you haven’t, well, let’s just say there is more to these turncoats than flashy clothes and big guns.

In Board Game terms, they are going to cause all your regular tasks to become more difficult:

As a new timed event that can occur at any time, the app for XCOM: The Board Game may instruct the Central Officer to draw an EXALT token from the pool. Each one of these tokens, when flipped faceup, specifies a location on the board: a continent, the satellites in orbit, a laboratory bay, the base, or the active mission. Then, whenever you’re attempting a task at the marked location, the task is considered dangerous—forcing you to use a different, six-sided alien die, which significantly increases your chances of failure. And to make matters worse, the only way you can remove one of these EXALT tokens is by spending one of your successes, rather than placing progress on your task.

If that’s not bad enough, the expansion is also introducing a second invasion plan…just in case you felt the first one was too easy.

If that wasn’t enough, when your base gets damaged, it’s no just one step closer to obliteration – there are now compounding negative effects that hit you, too! You know…cause it wasn’t bad enough.

XCOM: Evolution is an expansion for XCOM: The Board Game that complicates your war effort with new missions, enemies, and invasion plans, as well as mechanics that make your struggles more dangerous than ever. As the alien forces spread and peril increases, the sinister humans of the EXALT seek to take advantage of the chaos to infiltrate and destroy XCOM from within. Their treachery leads to new challenges, and you’ll face new crises, you’ll find your work subverted, and you’ll have to deal with new threats to the very resources you need to win the war.

Fortunately, your team has also made some advances since the war began. The discovery of the mysterious alien substance known as Meld promises to unlock some astonishing breakthroughs in the field of biomechanics. And XCOM: Evolution allows you to pursue some of these advances, potentially bringing formidable new weaponry to the field in the form of MEC Troopers!

Curious about XCOM? Well we’ve done a few articles about it.
