Our Friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy have been know to back games on Kickstarter. Well, one of the games they backed has started to show-up in select retail stores and they wanted to bring Random Encounters over to show it off:
Random Encounters is an adventure card game for 1-4 players. Each player takes on the role of one of the heroes and it’s there quest to take on bad guys and get tough enough to take on the game’s bosses eventually. It’s a really easy game to get into and it scales well when you add more players.
There are a ton of characters to choose from so you can try out lots of different ones. Each one has a different load-out of loot they can equip and they also have slightly different battle and leader abilities. Their basic stats are also different. The creators did a great job making each hero feel different.
Game play has a pretty simple loop. Draw a monster card, fight the monster, get loot, and then pass the leader token. After each player has been the leader twice, you face off against the boss. Damage is done based on comparing stats and a dice roll – so there is some luck involved. The monsters also scale with the number of players which was a simple way to keep things interesting.
As you get more loot, you can trade it around and you can make your adventuring team better. It’s a great family game that the adults won’t get board with – and that’s a win in my book! If you’re interested in reading over the rules really quick you can check those out HERE.
Overall, it’s got a cartoony art style and simple game mechanics designed to get you in and playing really quick. It’s great for kids and adults and seems like a good time for 1-4 players. It should be heading to stores soon, but for now you might want to check with your local retailer to see if they backed it or not. If not, you’ll just have to wait until it’s in stores for the full release!
