Challenge yourself to paint in the new year (and win prizes)!

Chalkboard here from Chalkboard War, and I want to report on an exciting event kicking off for the new year: the Warmachine/Hordes Painting Facebook group’s “2017 Point-a-Day Warmachine/Hordes Painting Challenge”. The challenge is simple: paint 365 points worth of models during 2017, and get chances at monthly prizes from their sponsor, Broken Egg Games, as you do. I participated in the 2016 challenge myself, and it was an amazing way to clear the backlog of painting, stay motivated while painting, and see all sorts of cool models completed by people around the globe. Best of all? It’s free!

This Dire Troll Bomber was my latest bit of unpainted backlog that I submitted in the 2016 contest. This is the “before” shot of him merely assembled.

The Challenge

The rules of the contest are really simple: models are worth their points cost in Warmachine and Hordes upon completion. There are some additions for models that don’t have clear costs. Warcasters and Warlocks earn points by base size (6 for small, 10 for medium, 14 for large, and 20 for huge). Attached models that don’t have points (e.g. Muggs and Krump for Hunters Grim) earn additional points for their base size. Models like objective markers or Risen Thralls do as well. If you magnetize your kits, they have you covered with extra points as well.

Participants track their points on a shared Google sheet that automatically tallies the monthly totals. Event Administrators use the sheet to calculate progress for each month. To qualify, you need only submit a photo of the incomplete model on your painting table, then the completed photo when you finish it. The contest includes all skill levels, and everyone is eligible to win the monthly prizes if they complete painting goals for that month.

Prizes like this great Arc Ninja from Broken Egg Games. Which I won during the 2016 event! The in-progress Dire Troll Bomber looks on in excitement! The best part is that it comes with the WM/W Painting logo!

Challenge Benefits

Broken Egg Games is giving prize support for the contest, rewarding monthly contest completion. Participants who paint points equal to or over the number of days in the month get two tickets for that month’s drawing. If you didn’t quite finish the full month of models, that’s okay too: they give one ticket to anyone who hits half that amount for the month. There’s also a final raffle among everyone who met the year-long goal of 365 points. This method is great, as participants can still get a chance at the rewards even without full completion in a given month. And if you miss a month (or six), no worries. You’re eligible for the following month just the same.

As a participant in the 2016 event, I can say that the best prize of all is all my completed models hitting the table. Having that extra bit of motivation and support was enough to keep me going with painting. Putting out the next model I’m working on helped too. It gave me manageable painting goals. I know that I’m like most players. I want the full 75 point force I’m planning right away, and that can mean a considerable backlog. This challenge helps eliminate the backlog, and that’s something almost every Warmachine and Hordes player would like.

Joining the Challenge

The challenge can be joined by anyone, but you need to be a member of the Warmachine/Hordes Painting facebook group. The link can let you join, or search Warmachine/Hordes Painting to add it. Wait for one of the group moderators to approve you. It is a good community, and the moderators are careful to make sure focuses only on the painting elements of the hobby. Once approved, you simply search facebook for the “January 2017 Warmachine/Hordes Point-a-Day Painting Challenge” and join up. It’s that easy.

I had a great experience doing the 2016 challenge. That’s why I wanted to share the experience and encourage my readers to check it out for 2017. The community is one dedicated to improving everyone’s painting, and really positive for beginners and veteran painters alike. And if nothing else, get a shot at some prizes from Broken Egg Games while working your way through your painting backlog. That alone is worth checking the contest out.

~ Can you paint 365 points in a year? Can you manage between 28 and 31 a month? Think you’re up to the challenge? Want to get through your Warmachine and Hordes painting backlog? This is the challenge for you!
