Geekery: Blade Runner 2049 Lays Off the CG
Good news for practical effects fans!
Director Denis Villeneuve shared that he’s going light on CG in the Blade Runner sequel in his latest interview with Variety:
“For me it was beautiful. I think I can count on one hand how many times I saw a green screen in all of those months of shooting. There will be CG enhancements, of course, but as much as possible it was in-camera. Having witnessed what he’s done for months, I think it will be Roger Deakins’ best work. He was deeply inspired by the project.”
That fits the approach I was hoping for. The fear was there would be an over reliance and we’d get the all CG set wonkyness. You can’t really not use CG with this kind of project, but Deakins is an amazing DP that can do a lot of things in camera. A mix of practical effects, a good DP, and well placed CG gives you movies with visual punch and you won’t see the CG – like Fury Road.
What do you think of the not quite age old conundrum of CG vs practical effects?
