Tabletop Spotlight: Test of Honour
Warlord Games has a new Samurai Miniatures game available now: Test of Honour!
Our friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy were kind enough to bring over Test of Honour, the samurai skirmish game:
It’s feudal Japan, Edo Era – the Emperor is weak in power but infinite in prestige. The Shogun and their clan lords have taken advantage of this time to ally themselves with or against the Emperor. Using this time of strife to settle age old grudges and disputes – battles ravaged the land. Players take control of a force of a samurai warband. A typical force is 5-20 models, consisting of a Samurai Hero, one or two other Samurai and a handful of other clan warriors.
The models and the contents of the box are pretty standard for what you would expect from Warlord. The models are the same type of plastic and scale as the rest of Warlord’s products (so Bolt Action plastics, but with Samurai Miniatures instead of WWII). You get a ton of models in the box, enough for either one really large “warband” or two smaller one. Plus you’ll get everything you’ll need to play a game – custom dice, tokens, rules, and every thing else.
Game play wise, it’s seems pretty fast paced. The combat uses the custom dice with a pretty easy to understand success/failure mechanic. The attack manages to overcome the defender they take damage. If the Damage roll is enough to take them out, you remove the model. If it’s not, the wounded model gets a blood drop. The next time it take damage the attack can add extra damage die for each blood drop.
Each weapon also has additional special rules – we cover a lot of these in the video above so if you want a more detailed discription check out the video. The rules review starts at the 8:30 mark.
Overall, this looks to be an interesting new skirmish game. If you’re a fan of the Edo era or if you just want to have an excuse to collect samurai miniatures then you should definitely check out Test of Honour!
Test of Honour
Test of Honour is a skirmish wargame played with roughly 5-20 models on each side. Players select their force before each game based around a samurai hero along with one or two loyal samurai companions and a variety of clan soldiers.
The 6 battle scenarios included tell a tale of bitter clan rivalry, betrayal and revenge. The battles are designed to be played in order, forming an ongoing story, with consequences for the victor and loser of each game.
AdvertisementAs you play through the scenarios your samurai will use new skills, and perhaps even take the shameful path of deceit and trickery to gain victory – such choices are the ultimate test of honour.
Will you survive the test?
