Wizards of the Coast just announced that they’re partnering with Catalyst to bring you new D&D themed deckbuilding game…

That’s right folks. Here’s one deck of many things that won’t ruin your campaign. Thanks to the folks at Wizards of the Coast and Catalyst Labs, we’ll soon be seeing a new game that draws on all the lore of a good D&D game but mixes it up card style. From what I can tell it sounds like you’ll be rampaging across the Forgotten Realms, encountering a Volo’s Guide of famous places and monsters, starting with the Sword Coast but then moving on in future expansions.

What’s curious to me is that it sounds like this is meant to replicate the whole idea of playing an RPG–only instead of an RPG you’re playing a deckbuilding game. Maybe if you really enjoy the tactical aspect of the game, this is for you? I’m not sure–but the little press blurb I found details plans for short adventures and long campaigns alike. So the line between this and actual D&D is going to be blurry at best. Check it out for yourself:

Dragonfire$59.99

Dragonfire is a 3 to 6 player deckbuilding game set within the world’s greatest roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Players choose from several classic fantasy races, from dwarf to elf, half-orc to human, and assume one of the quintessential roles of cleric, rogue, fighter, or wizard. Equipped with weapons, spells, and magic items, players begin their adventure along the famed Sword Coast, then journey to other Forgotten Realms locales, such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep, in future expansions. Along the way, they can level up their characters, find additional equipment, learn new feats, and much more.

A deckbuilder game starts each player with a small deck. Then, during the game, players acquire cards—usually from a large, common selection—that build their deck during play. This provides a dynamic, changing style that makes each game experience new.
