Overview: Battletome Kharadron Overlords
The Kharadron Overlords are coming in for a landing – come check out the insides of their Battletome!
The Dwarven-inspired Sky Miners are the fantastics new faction coming to Age of Sigmar. The Pre-orders are up and we’re going to be checking out what the Overlords do all week! For now, it’s time to dive into the new Order Battletome: Kharadron Overlords:
As we learned last Friday, the Kharadron Overlords are an off-shoot of the old Dwarf race. Unlike the Duardin who had to suffer through the Age of Chaos, these refugees found safety in the clouds above. They discovered a new “power source” with Aether-Gold, a metal that was lighter than air. Through a complex alchemical process they were able to refine it and develop advanced technology with it. For an age, they were able to “stay hidden” from the turmoil below and their society developed and prospered.
One of the key things that allowed them to survive was “The Code” – a new way of thinking. They no longer had faith in Kings or Gods – for they had failed them. They turned their backs on their former allies, who had also turned their backs on them. And while they didn’t support Chaos they also weighed the cost of interfering with the probable outcomes and the balance was desperately short. Much like Sigmar and the Stormcasts, they pulled away and waited for a more “profitable” time to reveal themselves.
That time came when the Stormcast Eternals returned and made a foothold in the Realms. Not only did they take territory and push back Chaos, they also started to establish cities again. At that point, the Kharadron Overlords saw the opportunity for profit. Now, they have made themselves known and re-established contact with the realms below.
The Kharadron Overlord society is covered in great detail in the battletome. It’s got a huge section dedicated to the background, the code, and each of the major Sky-ports. What I’m really intrigued about with the Overlords is that Games Workshop was able to take a lot of the tropes we’ve seen before and mix them altogether. The creators managed to use their own alchemical process to combine these different elements to create something all-knew and really interesting. At the same time, it’s got deep roots in the dwarf mindset, too. That’s a tough feat to achieve but it works and I’m digging the results.
Aside from all even more background, the book is going to have all the things we’ve come to expect in a new style Battletome – Rules & Warscrolls for all the units, New Allegiance Abilities, Command Traits, Battle Traits, Artefacts of Power, 5 new Battleplans (missions), Battalions, Path to Glory campaign support, and Pitched Battle Points!
On top all that – Games Workshop has also taken into account “The Code” and developed special “Artycles, Amendments, and Footnotes” for the Kharadron Overlords. These function like special bonuses you can “mix-and-match” or randomize to see how you’re army will play. They are really interesting and add some cool flavor to your forces. The book also has a an awesome look at all the miniatures, fantastic art, and those classic Games Workshop painting guides, too.
One last thing I want to point out is that the Kharadron Overlords are the first army to have transports as well. You can view the Embark and Disembark rules with the Arkanaut Frigate HERE. That’s right folks, transports are now a thing in AoS…
If you’re at all interested in the Kharadron Overlords I would highly recommend you get your hands on this Battletome. It’s worth a read for any fan of Warhammer. If you’re wanting to create your own Overlord themed forces and are having some troubling coming up with a cool concept we had some fun suggestions you could use. If nothing else, they will help get that creative ball rolling in the right direction. This army looks like a ton of fun to collect a the models are just great to look at. I’ve already encountered several fellow gamers that just want to buy an Airship and have never expressed interest in any tabletop game before. That’s pretty cool if you ask me!

A militaristic, mercantile society detached completely from the other branches of duardin that populate the Mortal Realms, they treat war and trade as much the same thing – a means to amass wealth; and they excel at both. More than anything, they seek aether-gold – this lighter-than-air element is their society’s lifeblood, holding their cities aloft, fueling their ships and powering their elaborate armour. Great sky-fleets of warships descend from dozens of sky-ports when a rich seam is discovered; the Kharadron Overlords will fight bitterly to accrue this vital substance, and the status it brings.
The Battletome hits shelves this weekend. What type of fleet are you going to throw-in with? Sky-Traders or Sky-Pirates?
