Games Workshop has just dropped a bomb: Formations are GONE from 8th – but don’t panic just yet. Come see the changes.

Love them or Hate’em, Formations were a BIG thing for Warhammer 40,000 7th edition. They led to some of the best/worst parts of list building and “power creep” and it sounds like GW has taken that into consideration for 8th. So if you’re weeping & wailing or cheering for more you might want to pause for a moment and check out the changes first:

“Formations are gone. That’s right, no more Formations. But don’t panic!

If your army is built using Formations right now, you’re going to be fine. In their place are a dozen new game-wide Detachments that are available to all factions. These are flexible enough that all of your current forces can be fit into them to form a Battle-forged army. The advantage of these is that all factions now have an even playing field of list building mechanics, rather than some having loads and some having to stick with the trusty Combined Arms option for every game.”

“These Detachments come with a few benefits and restrictions. The most common restriction is that all units in a single Detachment must share a faction keyword (Tyranid, Blood Angels or Imperium for example). The most common bonus is that, depending on how optimised your army is for the logistics of war, you’ll get Command Points to spend. We’ll cover exactly what these can do for you soon, but trust us when we say they are incredibly useful if used wisely, and you generally get more of them if your army is a well rounded and balanced force.”

Where to start! Formations, and all the benefits of running them, are not making the transition to 8th. That’s pretty major but at the same time this new system to replace them seems to do what it was designed to do: reset the playing field. Let’s face it, some formations were just plain better than others. Some armies had access to a TON of formations while others had a pretty lack-luster selection.

With these new Detachments everyone will have the same generic options and you’ll still be able to squeeze in some pretty crazy builds from the looks of things. Now, I also have a feeling that there will be some more specialized detachment options that just haven’t been revealed yet. Plus, we’ve only gotten hints at what the Command Points will do – those could impact your strategy quite a bit! We also know that different armies will also have different things to spend those command points on, which could impact how you build/play your forces.

Check out the Q&A Round-up for where we are getting a lot of these hints from

I’m looking forward to this new list building system as well. Honestly, creating a list (or trying to decipher an opponent’s list) in 7th was quite a chore. I almost felt like you needed a lawyer and an accountant to go over everything with a fine-tooth comb just to make sure. Or maybe hire a notary to ensure that it was a “legit” list.

My list is TOO Legit.

How do you think these new Detachments are going to work out? Will you miss the Formations or are glad to see them leave?
