The Adult Swim classic is getting a live action series thanks to Tomorrow Studios, which is partnership between ITV Studios and Marty Adelstein. The animation studio behind the original – Sunset Inc. – is on the list of exec producers. The adaptation of the animated series is being written by DC animation and Marvel movie contributor Christopher Yost.
No cast or distributor has been announced.
Yes, this is an American re-make.
There’s been a very mixed reaction so far. Some folks are keeping their minds open… some of us are not.
Let’s be honest: live action anime remakes tend to suck. Either they cling too hard to the source, or leave too much of it behind. There are a lot of elements here that are going to be difficult to manage in a live actions series – including a certain 4 footed character, a weird LA/Japanese/future noir aesthetic, and matching Yoko Kanno’s soundtrack. If the elements are out of whack the project will fail. It’s probably one of the worst series to attempt this with.
Can we just not? I’ve got the same feeling here that I did about Ghost in the Shell – just don’t. We don’t need it. If you really want to do something with the IP, make another animated movie. Live action is bad choice for this.
What do you think?
