Geekery: New Flatliners Trailer Falls… Flat
Everything is getting a remake, so why not this?
The 1990 original starring Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, and Kevin Bacon has a 49% critic’s rating and a 59% audience rating. It’s one of those movies you catch on basic cable on a Sunday afternoon and watch because you can’t be bothered to change the channel while you do laundry.
I guess that was good enough for the execs at Sony to have another go with it… and they conned another decent cast into signing on.
Can we just stop doing this now? There needs to be some sort of rule about direct remakes to force the movie industry to put out new(ish) stories. TV is doing a decent job at it right now, but the movie industry is addicted to repeats and tired formulas. Yep – there are some great indie and foreign films out there right now – The Bad Batch looks pretty awesome – but the existence of those doesn’t excuse what’s coming out of the major studios right now. It’s frustrating.
There have always, and will always be, bad movies. Can we please have some new ones? Thanks.
