Overview: Index: Imperium I & II
Curious about the new Index: Imperium I & II? Come take a look inside the books and what you’re getting!
We’re continuing our coverage of the Warhammer 40k 8th Edition release with a look inside the Imperial Indexes. If you’re a loyal follower of the Emperor then come take a look:
If your battle cry has been “What do we want? POINTS!” then these are the books for you. They contain all the datasheets, unit rules, power levels, upgrades, options, and POINTS for every unit in the Imperium. (From Games Workshop anyway – Forge World has the rest covered.) If you’re planning on playing an Imperial army in 8th, then you’re going to need at least one of these books.
Index: Imperium I covers all your standard Space Marines. The “big 4” chapters, plus a handful of characters like Pedro Kantor, Captain Lysander, Khan, and the other named Space Marine Heroes are all represented in this book. You’ll also get datasheets/rules for the other founding chapters. The only first founding chapter that was missing from the list was the Iron Hands. I think that has more to do with the fact that they don’t have a special character model than anything else…GW really should fix that.
You also get all the datasheets/rules for the Grey Knights, Deathwatch, Legion of the Damned, and Flesh Tearers (again, they had a special character model so it makes sense). Basically, if you’re looking to rock that Space Marine Power Armor in 8th then Index: Imperium I is the book for you.
Index: Imperium II is for every thing else in the Imperial Arsenal. The largest sections are the Astra Militarum and Adeptus Mechanicus – but again, if it wasn’t a Space Marine and it was part of the Imperium, it’s in this book.
So if you were a fan of the Inquistion, Assassins, Knights, the Sisters of Silence, Sisters of Battle, Adeptus Custodes or any of faction of the Imperial war machine then this book is for you.
Within both of these books, section follow the same pattern. It opens with a bit of background about the faction (typically a page or so – the full background is in the BRB), then we get a look at the army special rules. Those are referenced by the units instead of reprinting them under each unit entry. Then we get into the datasheets. Those are laid out in the same format that is similar to a codex. Typically it’s HQ, Troops, Elites, Fast Attack, then Heavy – Flyers and Transports are mixed in where appropriate. You’ll then find the full wargear section and points in the back of the books.
Now, if we’re totally honest, this does make list building a hassle if you’re just using the book. Needing to find the datasheet in the front then flip to the back to find the points per model and then points per wargear upgrade is a bit of a chore. It certainly makes me want to push towards using Power Levels for quick games…for now. Games Workshop has already said they are working on their own army builder and if it’s anything close to the AoS one, then it will be very welcome.
Overall, these books are must-buys if you’re planning on playing any Warhammer 40k 8th and you own one or more of these armies. Considering they each run $25 and you get access to multiple sets of rules I like this much better than the old codexes. But if we put on our speculating spectacles, it certainly feels like this is just a stop-gap to tide us all over until the new codexes come out. But you know what – I’m okay with that. For the first time in a very long time all the armies in the game will be on the same new grounds – come June 17th, it will be a whole new Ball Tabletop Game!
