Overview: Warhammer 40K 8th Edition Rulebook
Curious about the new edition of Warhammer 40,000? Come take a look inside the new rule book!
We’ve been pouring over the new rule book all weekend and now we’re going to show off our initial impressions:
The new Warhammer 40,000 rule book is a 280 page Hard Cover book. If you’ve been watching our coverage of 8th, then you already know that the core rules for 8th are only 8 pages long. So what is in the 272 pages? A LOT of game information. The first (roughly) 2/3 of the book is all background and lore. It covers each faction in the game and the current state of the Grim-Dark Universe. I’m still chewing through all that – it’s a lot to digest. Plus we only have the one copy in the office and everyone is trying to read it…we had to resort to dicing off to see who gets it.
The rest of the book is the rules and advanced rules sections. The rules are the 8 pages + some example pages with pictures to show you how things work. The advanced rules have everything for playing open, narrative, and matched play games. This includes all the different missions, deployments, objectives, warlord powers, detachments, and things like that. It also covers Planetstrike, Cities of Death, Stronghold Assault, Death from the Skies and all those extra stratagems. This edition is not lacking in different types of games to play in 40k.
I think GW has done a fantastic job creating a ruleset that will appeal to any type of gamer. If you’re into playing narrative games then you can find a missions/deployment/special scenario in this book. If you want the “Tournament” experience then you’ll find that in this book, too. And if you’re looking for anything in between, GW has you covered.
If you want to get a copy of this rule book, you’ll be glad to know it’s included in the Dark Imperium Starter box. Or if you just want the book solo you’ll be able to order that, too. I have a feeling that this rule book is going to be around for a long time so picking up this book is going to be a long term investment. Because the core rules are in this book and GW is planning to release Chapter Approved updates to the game, 40k as a game is moving to a different type of model. It’s feeling more and more like this edition of the game will be a “living ruleset” vs previous editions. I can’t wait to see what else GW has planned!
