Akrotiri is a game for two players who are assuming the roles of rival explorers in classical Greece. You have maps to lost temples that need to be “excavated” but you also need to raise funds to pay for the trip. You must place your map tiles from your hand and then sail your boats to gather resources. You can then sell those resources on the market place for coin to help fund your expedition.
One of the cool things about this game is the resource market – it actually varies based on what resources are available. I thought this was a really nice touch and made the game more strategic than just relying on random tile draw. And speaking of tiles, the placement mechanics also add to that complexity. Only a savvy explorer is going to be able to juggle the resource market, tile placement and the need to discover temples. Really, these mechanics combine to make a challenging game that scales based on your skill level and your opponent.
Another thing I really liked about this game is that when you lose to a better player you can learn why you lost – here’s a hint: it’s not just because of bad dice or random card draw. While this game does have an element of luck, it’s really about proper planning of your turn and managing your resources – I really appreciated those factors.
Overall, Akrotiri is a fun game to add to your collection. It’s great for two players and there are rules you can download from 3 or 4 player games. It is an open secret that numerous temples are scattered around the Aegean near the island of Thera, but you know where to find them! With maps in hand, it’s time to set out and become a legend in Akrotiri. In this two player game, you are rival explorers in Classical Greece searching for legendary Minoan temples—but first you’ll first need to fund your expedition. You must explore the uncharted Aegean, gather resources, and sell them for a profit before you can excavate the hidden temples.
Akrotiri combines elements of tile-laying, hand management, and resource gathering. The path to the temples becomes clear as players chart the Aegean. Through clever Land tile placement, players match the board with the Map cards in their hands. In turn, this leads to the lost temples. Uncovering a temple scores points and unlocks additional actions each turn. The more temples you excavate, the more points you’ll score, but the secret goal cards keep the final victor a mystery until the very end. Whoever can strike the perfect balance between exploring, gathering resources, and excavating temples will go down in history!
