Geekery: We Might be Getting a Robotech Movie
Sony has hired a director to develop a full length feature based on the anime series.
Sony snatched up the rights in 2015 and according to the Hollywood Reporter, they have found their man…
Andy Muschietti, who directed the upcoming film version of Stephen King’s It, has been tapped to develop and helm the studio’s adaptation of the anime featuring giant armored warriors.
Muschietti’s creative partner Barbara Muschietti will join Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton in producing the project, which is based on the 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Japan’s Tatsunoko Productions.
Given Muschietti’s resume I don’t think they’re going for more animation – this is likely going to be live action. It’s going to be an undertaking, and while Mama was creepy and generally satisfying, it’s not Robotech. He’s got a lot of ground to cover and some proving to do in the projects before this, which includes a live action Locke and Key for Hulu.
I’m cautious of anime to live action, as most of y’all are aware. I’m keeping with that here. I will say that giant robots are a bit more approachable than Cowboy Bebop or Akira or Ghost in the Shell; but that doesn’t mean the original can’t be totally screwed up during translation. I want it to work, but I don’t have high hopes.
