Goatboy here again and with two new CSM & Grey Knight books I get to brew up some nasty list ideas.

Overall I think the Chaos Space Marines got a book with a lot of neat play styles, good rules, and excellent chance to be near the top of the “balanced” heap when 8th edition finally fully rolls out.  Grey Knights on the other hand feel a bit to expensive still – but having that much gold and silver on their army has to make them expensive.  Still the Grey Knights did give me a goofy list idea that might not be too good – but still feels really fun to throw out on the table top.  Will start with the initial Good guy list idea and then move onto some Bad Guy list thoughts as there are my “default” army in the coming months.

You can call me Master now!

I won’t lie – the idea of a Grand Master in the Bjorn of doom has me excited.  It is one of those cool ideas that should look great on the table top and maybe he will be decent enough to survive the opponents incoming firepower.  I do like how he has the ability to get a 2+ for those armies that spit out the massed Ap damaging Plasma and other evil things.  Of course to get into the range of doing it during most turns means a good deal of Command Points to utilize – which also means the army isn’t just 6-8 Dreadknights and over utilization of one of the “kinda bad” detachments.  This means I need to look at a Battalion to truly get this working right.

Dread-palooza

Grey Knight Battalion
HQ: Grand Master in a Dreadknight, Dreadfist X 2, Gatling Psilencer, Personal Teleporter

Imperium Soup Battalion – aka very bland Cream of Potato
HQ: Inq Greyfax
HQ: Primarus Psyker
Elites: Eversor Assassin

Troops: Acolytes X 1, Laspistol

Tactics

Basically you got Rhinos to hide your guys in, have enough to teleport in all 5 Dread Knights, and then you have my favorite unit in the Imperium – the Eversor Assassin.  I think you could add in a Culexus if you wanted to get cheeky but the 3 crazy drugged up monsters seem to work better.  I went with Inq Greyfax as she looks neat.  I am sure putting in another Primarus Psyker or two might be better but this army has to look cool with 5 teleporting jerks coming down, shooting mind bullets and blessed fire.  Plus you are sitting at 9 Command Points to utilize with your Grand Masters.  I wish the Heavy Psycannon shot more as it just doesn’t seem worth it as you are hitting on a 3+ for the GKM and a 4+ on the Regular Dreadknights.  I don’t see any rule that makes it where Dreadknights or Terminators shoot better so it just very sad to try and utilize some better “ranged” shooting.  I think the points end up being under 2000 pts but man – we really need an army builder.

Next up we have some Chaos Space Marine armies that I am currently brewing.  Will start with another big monster/robot/etc list.  As you know Legion Tactics only go on the troops, bikers, and Helbrutes.  Lucky for us CSM players – FW updated all their dreadnoughts to have the keyword Helbrute.  I wish all the walkers got the Helbrute keyword but I can’t expect to get every dream fulfilled.  I am just glad the CSM seems pretty decent and should let me win with my favorite set of bad guys.  The Legion Tactics that I find to be really good right now are the Renegades and the Alpha Legion.  Both give some extremely powerful movement/deployment capabilities which lets you out play the opponent in the least dice effective phase.  We’ll start with Renegades as my Dreadnought idea is based on using the run, charge, and Assault weapon capabilities.

The Contemptor dreads got the Helbrute update and while expensive, I think they high movement, access to mortal wound throwing assault weapons, and not losing their assault capabilities means they might be worth their inflated point cost.  The Soulburner is an upgrade for the Combi-Bolter option on the power fist that gives the Dread a 24″ Assault D3 weapon that on every hit causes a Mortal wound.  There isn’t the whole – roll a 1 and take a mortal wound on yourself so getting the -1 to your BS for advancing isn’t a big deal.  Plus it already hits on a 2+ so a 3+ to hit is pretty awesome.  Mix in some Daemon Princes to help with some double moves and more Mortal Wound damage as well give another “smash unit” and you might have access to a really powerful army.

Contemplate-Heresy

Chaos Space Marine Renegades Battalion “Red Corsairs”
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter, Mark of Tzeentch
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter, Mark of Slaanesh
HQ: Huron
Elite: Helforged Chaos Contemptor, Helforged Deathclaw X 2, Soulburner X 2
Elite: Helforged Chaos Contemptor, Helforged Deathclaw X 2, Soulburner X 2
Elite: Helforged Chaos Contemptor, Helforged Deathclaw X 2, Soulburner X 2
Elite: Helforged Chaos Contemptor, Helforged Deathclaw X 2, Soulburner X 2
Elite: Helforged Chaos Contemptor, Helforged Deathclaw X 2, Soulburner X 2
Troops: Chaos Cultists X 30
Troops: Chaos Cultists X 20
Troops: Chaos Cultists X 20

Tactics

This list is all about just coming at you, throwing out some Soul Burner wounds, maybe get in assault and still have enough to cover their back bases.  I was just looking for a way to utilize the Move+Advance capabilities from the Renegade Legion Tactics and Huron helps keep the Cultists at home with his “everyone” passes Morale if they have the Red Corsairs badge.  I am sure you could dump 2 of the dreads for some bike units to help counter assault things – but I get the feeling this many monster dreads coming at an opponent might do enough.  Plus the chance to do 10d3 mortal wounds is pretty gnarly.

Khorne’s”Big Guy”

Right now I am trying to utilize the Lord of Skulls for some Dumb ideas.  I don’t know how good he will be and the thought is to try and do it with some Daemons but the fear of Objective secured ruining my days might be too much.  Still it is a thought and utilizing some kind of Fat butt of bodies to help “protect” the initial Tonka tank, then spreading out as he rushes towards combat to punch fools.  I went with Iron Warriors as the Chaos Artifact is pretty dang neat.

Supreme Command Iron Warriors
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Mark of Slaanesh, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter, Iron Warrior, FleshMetal Exoskeleton Relic – Warlord
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter, Iron Warrior
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter, Iron Warrior
HQ: Sorcerer, Jump Pack, Force Sword, Iron Warrior
LoW: Lord of Skulls, Daemongore Cannon, Hades Gatling Cannon

Daemon Battalion
HQ: Changling
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Daemon of Tzeentch, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter
HQ: Daemon Prince, Wings, Daemon of Tzeentch, Malefic Talon X 2, Warp Bolter
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2
Troops: Brims X 9, Blue Horror X 2

This has a ton of Daemon Princes – which I like.  A crazy annoying Warlord – chances for 3 FNP type saves as needed – and the Lord of Skulls coming to take your candy away.  I went with one Sorcerer in Jump Pack as he can jump in, get behind the Tonka, and make it go go go.  It also has enough Smites to do some damage as well.  It will probably change again as the Brims get crappier.  I am hoping the Death Guard book might give me some sweet Pox Walkers to help keep my back base safe in the coming weeks.  Hopefully this adds up to under 2000 points as again these list building exercises are a pain in the butt.

I love me some Daemon Princes as they were fun to build and paint.  This lets me play with all of them and my Lord of Skulls.

~What kind of lists have you been messing with?  What have you found to be interesting with the new codexes?
